Me and my partner Sam had a giggle watching this back so I thought I’d share a bit of my reality…🤣🤣

Finding time to train your dogs when you have children can be challenging…even when you’re a dog trainer!

It’s no different for me…multi tasking, trying desperately to find 10 minutes to train the dogs…whilst out the corner of my eye I see my little boy in the garden standing on a chair ready to launch himself off. Clearly my partner had no urgency about the situation 😆🫠

We did manage to get some training in for our upcoming competition in the end! 😄

🐩 1. No sitting needed. If the dog offers a sit, great! If they’d rather not get their bum cold or wet or it’s uncomfortable due to pain / MSK issues then standing is good too.

🦮 2. I prioritise loose lead walking from day one, but a loose lead could be beside me, in front of me, even behind me if you’re Ronnie 😆

🗣️ 3. Alert barking is a very normal part of dog behaviour. I actually like that they let me know. My approach is acknowledging their barks but also saying, yep that’s all good I’ve got it from here!

🏠 4. Both my dogs are comfortable (note, comfortable is different from happy!) being in a crate with the door closed. But it’s not something I’d say is a dealbreaker. There are other more ethical options available like pens and baby gates.

🥎 5. I rarely throw a ball for my dogs. Joint issues, obsessive behaviours, potential risk of choking - I could go on. If you don’t want to give up your ball throwing, think about making a swap for a ball with a handle and limit the weekly amount of time.

It’s no secret that I think the transition to motherhood would be easier if you had no dogs. I love them, of course, that goes without saying. But the added responsibility of 2 other lives, as well as a new baby is hard work! HOWEVER, then you get moments like this… Stanley has just started saying the dogs names and my heart is now a puddle on the floor 😭😭😭

I don’t like to share my sons face online for many reasons which i’m sure other parents understand 🥴 but this was too cute not to share ❤️

I like to think of the interactions I have with my dogs and the ones I work with as conversations. How they’re behaving gives me information…it can often tell us what they like, what they don’t, how much they’re willing to adapt in certain scenarios, or not at all in others. It’s just like building a relationship with our friends and family. The communication goes both ways. And here is Ronnie demonstrating that perfectly. 🥰

For some reason it’s made me sound like a squeaky mouse and i’m not sure why 🤣 it didn’t do that when i listened before I posted! GAH! Anyway im not redoing it now so I’ll have to be a mouse 😆

A slightly longer video than I’d usually make but hopefully it may be useful for those thinking of something like this for their dog! 🦮📳

If you see the BBC interview with a dog trainer saying the rise in bites in recent years is due to 'woke' dog training (she refers to force free I think) - then please just keep on scrolling...She talks a load of cr*p ...Instead lets think about:

- the rise of irresponsible and unethical breeders since Covid and the mix of dodgy genetics this has brought into the world

- therefore bringing in a mix of uneducated owners who are learning mainly from social media and owners that now have less time meaning not as much can go on training their dogs...which brings me to my next point...

- a huge rise in 'social media' dog trainers using harsh methods and unrealistic 'before and after' videos that appear to show quick fixes

- trainers that advocate for harsher methods not taking pain / MSK issues / GI issues into consideration when working with dogs

- the training world being unregulated which means anyone can give advice out!

I could go on... Let's be clear, dog training and behaviour work that is based on positive reward methods is not 'woke'. It is a basic right for the dogs that we bring into our lives. They at bare minimum deserve kindness and respect when we control everything else in their lives! Positive based training still comes with boundaries and 'rules' and it isn't just throwing cheese at a problem like she makes out it is.

My training style has changed so much in recent years and that’s only natural. If you’re still training the same way you did when you first started out you’re not growing or learning as a trainer.

The years of focusing on obedience and compliance are gone. Now my focus is on improving your dog’s quality of life, reducing as much of their stress as we can and increasing their ability to ‘be a dog’ in this world where as humans we seem to want to control and micromanage every aspect of their short lives.

Don’t get me wrong there’s a place for obedience training and our dogs should absolutely be able to follow cues and listen to us when needed. But it’s less about ‘you say as I do’ now and more ‘I’ll meet you on your level and let’s work through it together, how works for us both’. I’m not saying I’ve got it 100% correct, I don’t think anyone ever does in dog training but i’m really proud how far I’ve come.

So if that’s how you like to live life with your dog, welcome, you’re in the right place 👋🏼💗
