Sit-to-stands: aka puppy squats

This exercise is great to strengthen the quadricep, hamstring and gluteal muscle groups, and also to improve joint range of motion. Here’s some top tips to get the best exercise!
- Sit down backwards, stand up forwards. Moving forward around the room a little is ok, but the best form is where they can rock back and forth in the same position
- Use treats to keep engagement (keep an eye on their weight!)
- Hindlimb paws should be facing towards the front paws. If they are turned out, use the wall or a second person to encourage a more correct position.
- Quality over quantity. It often takes about 1-2 weeks to train good form in this exercise. Milo here is just starting out and very excited to do something new, his form will improve as he gets stronger and understands this exercise more. 3 good quality reps is more beneficial than 10 poor form reps.

I am in the process of changing physiotherapy software for small animal patients. Currently, you are receiving your physio reports via a PDF document, made from a word document. This is going well, but I want to invest in your experience and care. Therefore, all new reports will now be sent via the Equicantis software.

Equicantis is successfully used in my equine patients, with great feedback. You will have a new experience, including:
- Full physio reports – assessment, treatments, etc. as before but much nicer looking
- Annotated anatomical diagrams
- Exercise plans WITH VIDEOS!
- Direct Invoicing
- Appointment reminders
- Client and new pet onboarding forms all completed online
- Vet referrals are now also sent online
This software also allows us to waste less paper on forms, helping us save more trees!

What do you need to do?
You don’t need to do anything; all patients will be transferred to the new system, so the next time you receive a report from me, it will be emailed from Equicantis, not me directly.
Please note that the software is specific to dogs. However, all cats will also go onto this software as a “dog”. Equicantis will be rolling out a cat version very soon, so getting the cats onto this system now means that it will be easier to transition later.
Remember, in line with GDPR, you have the right to amend or delete your data from my database at any time. Using Equicantis makes this process simpler, but also more secure, with improved protections. If you have any concerns regarding your data, please email me.

When I first met Belle, she was struggling with some pelvic issues. She became increasingly sensitive to any touching of her hindlimbs, kicking out with clear signs of pain, to the point the farrier couldn’t touch the back feet at all! Her owner listened to this new behaviour as a way of communicating an issue, so physio was started.
On my first session I did not even attempt to perform any assessment or treatments to her back legs, but I focused on her lumbar back, gluteal fascia and sacroiliac using the mat. Immediately after her first session, she allowed the farrier to trim her back legs!
Now, 4 sessions in, she is doing so well that she allows me to lift her back legs and treat her hamstrings! And even when I hit something sore, she communicates this discomfort gently, not reacts with a kick.
This really is the reason I love my job! Such a great achievement for her ☺️

Happy Easter!

It has been a busy weekend, but what a lovely few days it’s been. Genuinely loving this weather right now.

And the great news is that all the ponies I have seen this weekend are doing so well they only need to be seen every 3-4 months!
That’s what happens when you follow exercise plans 😁.

This does mean I have more availability in May for new physiotherapy patients. Utilising electrotherapies, massage therapy, kinesiology tape and bespoke exercise plans to help achieve your goals.

Veterinary Physiotherapy - for the equine athlete in your life

We are thinking more about the blue skies, lighter evenings and warmer weather approaching - hopefully very quickly! We are also now thinking about what the next 6 months will look like for you and your horse. Longer hacks out, more lessons and clinics, and even putting on your brave pants and competing this season.

Your going to ask more from your horse, general fitness and endurance needs to go up, but just getting them fitter doesn’t equal better results, and could put them at increased risk of injury.

The goals of physiotherapy include:
- Reducing pain, stiffness and tension in the musculoskeletal system
- Improving joint range of motion
- Building muscle using targeted, low-impact high intensity exercises
- Improving flexibility
- Improving self-carriage and posture

Together, we could work to improve strength, jumping success or getting higher marks in the dressage competitions. Whatever your goals are for 2026, I am here to support you.

The Veterinary Surgeons Act Consultation

The Veterinary Surgeons Act (VSA) has been the law regarding the veterinary care of animals since 1966. A lot has changed since the legislation was last updated, especially in terms of the roles of veterinary professionals.

Did you know, under the current law, anyone can call themselves a veterinary nurse, physiotherapist, podiatrist or anything else “veterinary” without undertaking any formal qualifications (with the exception of veterinary surgeons) - I am sure you can see how this is extremely dangerous, having unqualified professionals impacting the health and welfare of your animals.

This is why I am taking the time (approx 4 hours worth!) to fully complete the VSA consultation. The consultation aims to gather opinions on potential reforms relating to:
- Regulation of all professionals in the veterinary team
- Protection of veterinary profession titles
- Regulating the veterinary businesses to protect the public and animal health and welfare
- Updating the regulator’s structure, moving towards a “fitness to practice” model with more robust complaints and investigative structures.

If the government decide to regulate the profession, it will bring the veterinary physiotherapy profession in line with human medicine, where only regulated professionals could call themselves physiotherapists, and must abide by strict standards and continuous professional development to maintain membership.

At the moment, regulation is voluntary. I am a registered member of RAMP, who are working to guide DEFRA in how allied health professionals should be considered in the new regulations. They already expect high standards in their code of professional conduct and in continuous professional development requirements from their registrants, and I have full faith they will represent the allied health profession well to develop a regulation that will work for everyone.

I encourage everyone, whether you’re a veterinary professional or a member of the public, to share your views. The new legislation is, ultimately, to protect you and your pets.

Hi all, I have had to make the tough decision to change my pricing structure this year.

Starting 1st April 2026, my prices will now be:
- Equine: £60
- Small Animal: £50

You may notice there is now no difference in initial and follow-up consultations. While the first appointment can take a little longer than follow-ups (especially once I get to know them), I still give myself the same allocated time per patient. This ensures that I am never rushed and your animal receives high quality care.

While the cost of everything has gone up, I am also looking to invest in my business more. I’d love a new laser, offering quicker and more effective treatments. I am also considering new treatment options such as canine kinesiology taping (as I do equine already), and therapeutic ultrasound for tendon repair. My main goal for this year is to change my reporting system for small animals, moving away from a Word document and onto the Equicantis software, as already done with my equine patients. This way, everyone gets appointment reminders, nicer looking invoicing and receipts (if required), and home exercise plans with videos!

Of course, all investments come with a cost. I hope this structure still maintains the accessibility of physiotherapeutic treatments, while maintaining viability.

I will still continue doing £5 discounts for multiple patients in the same house or yard, and for “referring a friend”.

As before, there may be extra charges if outside my catchment area, but you will be notified.

Heat Therapy with the epionyuk Epiony heat mat

You may see me reach for the heat pad while I am treating another area, but what this is doing is preparing the body for deep tissue massage therapy by:
- Increasing blood flow, helping to flush out waste products from the muscles
- Relaxation of muscle fibres, increasing length and reducing tension
- Reducing pain by over-stimulating sensory nerve endings, which blocks pain signals.

Horses especially love the warmth of the heat pad and it really helps them to relax and release. And now it’s winter the horses appreciate the warmth even more.

Tell me - what are your goals in 2026?

For some, it’s to get back out doing what they loved again. They may have had to be strictly rested for a long time, but with a careful plan they may be on the way to returning to normal activities again.

You may want to just keep on top of your animals comfort and mobility. A known condition that needs management for life, so they can continue doing what they loved again best.

Or, maybe you’re hoping to get to that more advanced level in your sport. You are looking for ways to improve their strength and condition to improve their performance.

I am looking forward to being a part of this journey with you. From pain and chronic condition management, rehabilitation post injury or surgery, to performance management and improvement, physiotherapy can help you achieve this years goals.

Mine? I’ll be striving for some personal bests in the gym this year, and I certainly can’t do that without doing my own physio exercises!
