IMPORTANT SO PLEASE READ; AVIAN INFLUENZA IN FURNESS IS RIFE! Err on the side of caution and wear thick rubber gloves and use a towel and place deceased birds in a doubled carrier bag and see if any vet will incinerate otherwise place bags containing the deceased bird in general waste.

The same applies to live sick birds, so if you find one like this Goose on Ormsgil Reservoir you can phone any vets and ask if you can bring it but take precautions as above. More information can be found here; https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/avian-influenza-in-wild-birds Whilst this disease is so prevalent it advisable to stop feeding birds as this is the main way that the disease is spread. All birds can contract this disease, and here are signs to look out for; Swollen eyes, shivering, beak incrustation, deformed head & neck, neurological signs & nasal discharge.

We will not admit any birds showing symptoms so please take any sick birds to your nearest vets after phoning them first. In the case of birds not showing symptoms but otherwise injured you can contact us out of hours or the vets during opening times. We're happy to advise and still take in birds that are not showing symptoms.

This Goose is still at the reservoir, and as we all have so many birds in our care we cannot afford to run risks. DEFRA have advised that we leave it sadly as we were not equipped with full PPE.
