Dog walking is an important professional service. A good dog walker will provide appropriate exercise, enrichment, companionship & safe care.
However, dog walking, dog training & behaviour mod are different services requiring different knowledge, skills & responsibilities.
A dog walker may help by reinforcing behaviours already taught by the owner or trainer, such as waiting at the roadside, responding to recall or walking on a loose lead, but that does not mean they are qualified to assess behaviour, identify why a problem is occurring or create a suitable training or behaviour modification plan.
Taking a dog for a walk is not the same as understanding:
β’ Learning theory & reinforcement
β’ Canine body language & communication
β’ Fear, anxiety, frustration & over arousal
β’ Aggression & bite risk
β’ Trigger thresholds & emotional regulation
β’ Breed specific behaviour & motivation
β’ Behavioural development
β’ Safe handling & defensive handling
β’ The difference between management & behaviour modification
β’ When referral to a trainer, behaviour practitioner or veterinary professional is necessary
This distinction matters because the professional dog walking industry is currently unregulated in the UK, A person does not have to complete any recognised qualification or demonstrate knowledge of canine behaviour before advertising themselves as a professional dog walker.
*This does not mean that dog walkers are irresponsible or unskilled*
- There are many excellent walkers who invest heavily in their education, insurance, canine first aid, secure transport, risk assessment & professional development.
- Some are also independently qualified dog trainers or behaviour practitioners.
The important point is that these standards are not guaranteed by the job title alone.
Within my own behaviour & training work, I have met several dogs whose existing difficulties had been *unintentionally strengthened* during walks with a dog walker. This was not necessarily through deliberate poor handling, but because the walker did not recognise what was reinforcing the behaviour or understand how their response was influencing it.
Allowing a dog to pull towards every scent, person or dog can reinforce pulling. Moving a dog away immediately whenever it barks or lunges may strengthen that response if gaining distance is what the dog wants. Repeatedly exposing a fearful or reactive dog to situations it cannot cope with may increase sensitisation rather than create improvement.
- Even well intended actions can affect learning. Without an understanding of the function of a behaviour and the consequence maintaining it, a walker may unknowingly work against the training plan the owner is followingβ¦.
Owners should therefore feel comfortable asking a potential dog walker:
β’ Are you insured for professional dog walking?
β’ Have you completed canine first aid training?
β’ What qualifications or professional education do you hold?
β’ How many dogs do you walk together at a time?
β’ How do you decide which dogs are suitable to walk as a group?
β’ How are dogs transported & secured?
β’ What would you do if a dog escaped, became injured or was involved in an incident?
β’ How do you manage reactive, fearful or over aroused behaviour?
β’ What training methods & equipment do you use?
β’ Will you follow the training plan already established for my dog?
β’Are your transporting crates secure & crash tested?
A responsible professional should also recognise the boundaries of their own competence - If a dog displays significant fear, aggression, reactivity, separation related distress or a sudden behavioural change - simply giving the dog more walks or *attempting* training without the appropriate knowledge may not address the underlying problemβ¦
Walking can support a dogβs physical & emotional wellbeing, but it is not automatically training & exercise alone is NOT behaviour modification.
Choose a dog walker for their knowledge, standards & ability to keep your dog safe, not simply because they are available, inexpensive or describe themselves as a βdog professional.β
Your dog cannot check someoneβs qualifications, insurance, handling practices or experience.
That responsibility belongs to us.
