I never thought that part of my business would be creating products for horses until Lupin and Remo came into my life. These two beautiful boys are my daughters horses and a big part of our family.
I didn’t sit down one day and decide to incorporate remedies for horses into my business, like all good things in life it just for of happened. My daughter was getting her second horse a handsome wee foal called Remo. He was only 6 months and had not been handled very much. We needed to transport him from Bangor to Templepatrick which we knew would involve him being in the trailer for about an hour all in. As he’d never left the yard before I was worried that this might be really stressful for him so I started to look for something that would calm and settle him on his journey to his new home. There was an array of calming products, some had no ingredients listed, some had extensive lists of all kinds of ingredients listed many things I didn’t recognise. So too much info and no info excluded these products for me. Then there were a few natural looking products which I considered until I noticed that they had to be given orally and some were not recommended for foals....so I was kinda stuck. We didn’t want to stress the foal by trying to get him to eat something so I really wanted something that I could put on him rather than in him. It was at this point that I thought why don't I make one myself?? I already make remedies for friends and for my dogs so why not a horse. This was the birthplace of Equi-Essential Oils.
I went of and did lots of research into what could and could not be used with horses and how to administer without causing any stress to the animal. So after all my reading and research I decided that if I made an essential oil based calming spray I could spray my daughter and everyone who would be handling the foal and this way the oils would be administered to Remo without any major fuss. We did just that and the journey, loading and unloading went without a hitch. At this point I thought that this would be the beginning and end of my venture into oils for horses, the universe had other ideas.
Later that morning I was hanging around the yard when I noticed that some horses who were generally not very friendly were all of a sudden my best friends. Plus when I was giving Lupin his scratches he was mega calm. I remember thinking to myself the horses seem to like this oil, but that was it really. I’d made a bottle of the stuff so Bronte used it that evening before riding Lupin and she thought that he was very calm and easier to manage. Her friend Sasha then tried it on her horses and she too noticed a difference with the demeanour of her horse. So word spread and a few people asked me to make them the oil which I did and they are getting great results. So my horse calming spray is now very much a thing!
