I've been very quiet on this page recently but as I have had a bit of interest in my training services I thought it was about time I updated!

In January I took a job with Guide Dogs and am now training to become a Guide Dog Mobility Specialist. Once qualified I will be training guide dogs, matching them with visually impaired people and supporting the partnerships. I am loving my new job, it's really exciting and it is going to be incredibly rewarding.

As my new role takes up so much of my time I have decided that I am no longer able to offer my training services through Kim's K9 Academy. Thank you to all the lovely people and dogs who attended my training classes and had 1 2 1 sessions ❀

Here are some photos of my first guide dog in training Cumbrae 😍 He is a little superstar ⭐

I was wondering how I was going to get this big box in the recycling...then I put my chief recyclers on the case ! 🐢

When your dog walks nicely on a lead it makes for a much more enjoyable walk. Loose lead walking is one of the most useful things you can teach your dog but once they know it its important to keep that skill topped up.

Charlie has excellent lead walking skills, but it's nice now and again to remind him that what he is doing is exactly what I want him to. A tasty treat at the right time let's him know he is getting it right πŸ‘πŸ•

Sorry for the lack of posts. My ranger work is very busy this time of year πŸ”₯

Couldn't not share this video of Jura chasing flies on our walk 🦟 they were out in force this evening!

Excuse Charlie's panting in the background, it's hot today! πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅

Jura was getting all geared up for summer after the amazing 16 degree weather we had at the weekend 🌞

After looking out the window this morning she has decided she is staying in bed 😴πŸ”₯

Anyone elses dog hiding from the weather today? πŸ˜‚β˜ƒοΈ

Sometimes when you have a dog with a particular struggle it can be hard to see the progress you have made πŸ€“

I took this picture about 10 days after Moss came to live with us. He had been settling in well as far as we could see. He had made friends with Jura and Charlie, started to form a strong bond with me and Duncan and had made some training progress, including learning it was safe to go to the toilet in front of us (he held it in for over 20 hours one day we were away from home and he couldn't go in the garden without us!)😬

On the evening I took the first picture I went to take Moss for a walk and he refused to leave the front door. If I let him off the lead he tried to get in through the garden gate. He was clearly telling me he didn't want to leave the house, which had become his safe space after the trauma of being rehomed. This behaviour told me that he was feeling overwhelmed and it was a month before he chose to leave the house again 🐢

When I saw this picture the other day I realised that although Moss still has his struggles he has come a long way πŸ₯³

Dog training isnt linear, you will make progress and there will be setbacks. With patience and consistency you will achieve your goals but it can be helpful to keep a record of your progress so you can see how far you have come ❀

As promised here is a video of me using a pet nail dremel to trim Jura's nails

⚠️ Warning: this might be the most boring dog training video that you have ever seen ! πŸ˜‚

I use a dremel as I hate clipping dogs nails with nail clippers. I always feel like I am going to hurt them with clippers and the dremel allows me to keep the nails filed down on a regular basis.

Jura took a while to warm up to the dremel, she didn't like the scary noise and wasn't keen on having her individual toes held.

So we slowly built up trust using the bed as a 'start button' for the dremel to begin. If Jura is on the bed she is giving me permission to handle her paws and if she isn't comfortable she is free to leave and I won't keep trying. I also rarely do all her toes at once but do them over smaller sessions.

By giving her the choice to participate or not she more often than not decides to have her nails done as she knows she can leave whenever she wants and by staying she also gets a tasty treat as a reward. You can see at one point she pulls away but when I let go she chooses to put her paw back in my hand letting me know she is ready βœ…

Grooming needn't be a struggle. With trust and training we can make it a positive experience for everyone 🐢

Note this pet nail dremel does come with a guard but I have taken it off as Jura's paws are so tiny I find it easier without!

There's a monster under the bed 😬

Still snowy here β„πŸ˜Š

We have had lots of fun playing and walking in the snow β˜ƒοΈ we even built the dogs a cave in the garden that they can zoom in and out of, they love it !

The dogs seem to love the snow as much as us, they get very excited and love to dig in it, roll in it and chase snowballs. It's great enrichment for them and there are lots of opportunities to practice your training and play games which help strengthen your relationship πŸ•

It was a chilly minus 21.9C here last night and it's still cold πŸ₯Ά Jura has decided she is staying in for the day, she has dragged her blanket onto the heated kitchen floor and hasn't moved in a while! πŸ˜‚ Smart dog!

Beautiful snowy day again, Moss had lots of fun chasing snowballs ❄

Playing with your dog is great fun for both of you but its also a great way to build your relationship

If you want your dog to stick with you on walks you need to be more fun and exciting than everything else in the environment πŸ₯³

A great relationship with your dog will mean they want to be near you rather than off exploring the woods πŸ•πŸŒ²

You can also be creative with your rewards, today I used snowballs for some of our training games!

Remember the dog decides what is rewarding, train the dog you have in front of you by adapting to their likes and dislikes 🐢
