BARKIN BISTRO

To save wee sweary words in the shop, here’s how Barkin Bistro orders play out - especially over the summer.

This fabulous, lightly cooked fresh product is made in Northern Ireland and shipped to us ambient. It takes two days all wrapped up in foil and dry ice to get here, so we prefer to order at the beginning of the week to avoid any issues with it potentially getting caught up in weekend parcel problems.

We are already catching up with an order which had to be discarded as DPD routed it wrongly. We are unlikely to get another prolonged spell of hot weather after the next few days, but if it happens, we won’t risk orders at all.

I order every Sunday evening for the guys across the water to get it picked, packed and out to us first thing Monday morning.

So until it arrives in on a Wednesday the flavours might not all be in stock.

I hope that making the process known saves anyone a journey (and swearing at the freezer!)

I absolutely hate having to do this post again 😢

I also got massive grief the last time from a lady saying that it is not dog friendly to ask customers to be aware of what their dogs are up to in the shop, they should be free to sniff and socialise 🤔

But we have lost around £100 of stock this week, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have boundaries on the issue?

So here are our rules, not just for the sake of our stock but for safety:

🐾No off lead dogs

🐾Please lock extending leads at normal lead length, the staff kitchen is a favourite place for dogs with a 5m reach to head 😳

🐾If your dog enjoys coming in for a visit, take two minutes outside to see if they need a p*e

🐾Be aware of what your dog is sizing up no matter what you are browsing

🐾Accidents happen - half of the stock lost last week wouldn’t have been had the owner made us aware - please don’t leave without telling us and giving us a chance to sort things

🐾Repeat offender - we may ask you to leave him (sorry boys but it’s rarely the girls!) in the car

Four legged visitors make our day ❤️

It’s a minority problem, so this doesn’t apply to most of our customers and most owners of a dog who c***s his leg with excitement are aware of their tendencies, so take avoidant action.

One of our last Friday customers was Luke (named after his mummy’s fave country and western star!!)

He popped in for some feeding advice and the decision is made - he’s going to be a fully raw fed boy 🩵

The first thing about feeding a puppy on raw is always to check bodyweight at every stage - the right amount of food is necessary to be sure that we have the right amount of nutrients available for growth.

So it was straight onto the scales! And very relaxed about it all he was too.

Well didn’t we cause havoc on Waggon Road today….😬

Our two pallets of Dibo turned up in a refrigerated lorry with no tail lift - in the (unchecked) expectation that we have a forklift. We don’t.

A lovely neighbouring business came to help, but their forklift broke down so their van came along to see if they could fix the forklift.

Then behind that huge lorry, the forklift and the van, another huge lorry with three pallets of Petcayr own label dry food pulled up 😩

Chaos 😳

The two pallets of frozen had to be handballed off the lorry before being put away. The three pallets of own label then had to go away too.

All with the shop open and having a busy day.

Petfood retail is not for the faint hearted. Alex and Lewis pulled off a blinder of a shift today 😘

I mostly flapped about the place fretting and feeling a bit useless, but I did feed the workers 😂

Steve and I sneaked a couple of days off to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary.

We had planned on going away, but with the weather so rubbish we got on with a few jobs needing done at home.

Today has been so blinking miserable that after a nice lunch at the fox and willow we’ve lit the log burner 😂

Huge thanks to Alex and Gillian, they’ve had a really busy couple of days ❤️

I’m back to work tomorrow but you won’t see Steve until Saturday. Don’t worry he’ll get bored though, there’s still a few chores for him to do.

We are first and foremost a shop. We are open 6 days a week for sales of petfoods, treats and supplements. And advice, chat and banter of course!

We always had a small delivery run which grew massively overnight at lockdown and has stayed in place covering hundreds of miles each week.

Whilst the runs are busy, to keep us coming to your area every week, particularly in the areas a bit further away, we need to have enough drops to keep it viable - so how about some shares?

We go out of our way to be very reliable with our delivery service so, if we drop to you regularly, how about reviewing what we do?

The delivery charge is £3.99 - pretty much the same as a takeaway meal!

If anything is out of stock online always give us a wee shout and we can tell you when it’s due in. If your postcode won’t come up for delivery and you are on a run we will take your order by phone 😊

School holidays been a struggle 😩 with ££££’s ??

Our popular economy chicken and cereal dog food is in a 15kg bag for just £22.

Prefer to feed with more animal protein and no grain? Hutchies 12kg Chicken and Potato or Lamb and Potato have 40% animal protein content and are only £33.50

And we have raw in 454g blocks starting from just 95p

July seems to have kicked the backsides of quite a few folks finances so let’s not stress too much about August?
