NOTICE FOR CLIENTS – Routine Health Checks
Over the last few years we have been encouraging clients to receive regular health checks for their pets.
This is since the Veterinary Regulations changed, and as part of ongoing improvement of clinical standards.
We just wanted to provide an explanation for the reason for this and what this involves.
Regardless of any medication or vaccination requirements, it is important that our pets receive a health check on at least an annual basis. This allows us to monitor any physical changes such as changes in weight (either weight loss or weight gain), skin and fur condition, heart, lungs, teeth, eyes, ears etc, but also any changes in behaviour and overall demeanour.
This allows us to pick up as early as possible on any issues and ensure these issues as far as possible, don’t develop into anything more concerning. In addition, if our pets are on regular medication, we need to ensure that this medication is not affecting our pets inany way and ensures they are on the correct dosage for their age, weight and health. This applies to all medicationincluding anti inflammatories, antibiotics, painkillers, antiparasitics (including flea, worm and tick treatments) and others.
The effects of these medications can be harmful without careful monitoring, therefore these health checks might include performing blood test, checking liver and kidney values, amongst other things.
Depending on the type of medication, will depend on the intervals with which we recommend a health check. For example, an antiparasitic might be once a year health check, whereas diabetic, epilepsy, thyroid, steroids etc might be every 3- 6 months, depending on the pets personal health, age and situation.
We hope this provides a more comprehensive explanation for why we recommend these checks, particularly whenclients request repeat prescriptions.
The veterinary regulations legally require us to do this to ensure ongoing health and safety of pets and it has proved in some cases, a life saving service for certain pets, who otherwise would have gone undetected with certain health conditions.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask your Vet at your next consultation.
Kind regards
