Science & Innovation

Saracen Horse Feeds relies upon clinically proven research to deliver science-based nutrition, created and delivered with innovation and expertise. Saracen is the exclusive UK partner of Kentucky Equine Research, who are an independent equine research centre based in the United States of America. The 20-year relationship has given Saracen the opportunity to consistently provide nutritional solutions with unique, progressive feeds that can make a real difference. Applying this wealth of knowledge and understanding of equine nutrition and physiology whilst combining it with modern day technology allows us to offer unique services to track the development of youngstock via Gro-Trac, the fitness of performance horses via ClockIt Sport and provide fully balanced rations using MicroSteed. Striving for success across all levels of customer care, formulation, and nutritional understanding in order to meet the needs of all of our customers and their horse’s individual requirements. With results that speak for themselves, Saracen Horse Feeds are proud to support performance at all levels with many long-term relationships forged with high profile riders including Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin, Sam Griffiths, Francis Whittington, Izzy Taylor and Richard Howley, whilst also feeding Mount St John, the renowned breeders of the next generation of dressage medal winners. In addition, we are equally proud to support horse owners who enjoy a wide variety of leisure activities. Our markers of success aren’t always in podium positions, but we are also regularly called upon by equine veterinarians to support nutritional recovery and rehabilitation while horses are convalescing or post-operative, and to manage Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome, Laminitis, and muscle myopathies.

When horses sweat during exercise or in hot weather, they lose important electrolytes including sodium, chloride, potassium and magnesium which are all essential for hydration, recovery and performance.

Restore® SR is designed to help replace these losses with a unique slow-release formula, delivering electrolytes gradually so they can be utilised more effectively by the body.

The sugar-free, gut-friendly formula makes it suitable for performance horses, including those with sensitive digestive systems, while adjustable feeding rates allow you to tailor support to workload and sweat loss.

Whether horses are working hard, travelling or coping with warmer weather, Restore® SR helps support hydration and recovery when they need it most.

Nutrition Adviser, Iona, shares her top tips for helping maintain hydration in horses during hot weather ☀️

• Provide plenty of clean fresh water at all times
• Feed a soaked mash such as Re-covery Mash® to help encourage additional fluid intake
• Dampen hay or haylage to increase moisture intake
• Offer a salt lick to encourage drinking

Hot weather can significantly increase the risk of dehydration in horses, particularly during heatwaves or sudden rises in temperature like we are having now!

Horses may need to drink far more than usual to stay hydrated, especially if they are exercising, travelling or not yet acclimatised to the heat.
Signs of dehydration in horses can include:
• Skin slow to return after a pinch test
• Dry or tacky gums
• Slow capillary refill time

Always ensure horses have access to plenty of clean fresh water and regularly check automatic drinkers are working correctly.

Feeding a soaked mash can also help support hydration during hot weather. Re-Covery Mash® is designed to be fed with plenty of water, and its highly palatable banana flavour can help encourage intake, making it ideal after exercise, travel or during periods of extreme heat.

Keeping horses cool, hydrated and monitored closely is essential during warmer weather so get a Re-Covery Mash® pouch from our online shop today: saracen-shop.com/products/re-covery-mash®?variant=55792957129090

Hot weather exercise guide for horses ☀️

We often see posts regarding dogs struggling in the heat but horses do too, especially during exercise, travelling or standing in direct sunlight. High temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of dehydration, heat stress and heatstroke.
Under 20°C
Suitable for normal exercise with sensible management and plenty of fresh water.
20–25°C
Reduce intensity or duration where needed and include regular walk breaks.
25–30°C
Avoid strenuous work. Keep sessions short and light, ideally early morning or later in the evening.
Over 30°C
Avoid ridden exercise where possible and focus on keeping your horse cool and hydrated.

Cooling tip:
Research by Dr Joe Pagan and the team at Kentucky Equine Research found that continuous application of cold water is the most effective way to cool horses down. There’s no need to scrape the water off between applications so keep the cold water flowing to help reduce body temperature as efficiently as possible.

More fantastic results from Royal Windsor...

Huge congratulations to BRAVO - the little horse that wanted to dance rider Emma Nuttall, who made history by winning both the Spanish Parade Class and the Portuguese Class, becoming the first owner rider to achieve both titles.
A brilliant show too, for Team Ahern with Arabella taking the win in the First Ridden and Mini Championship, while Lilly finished 2nd in the 148cm Show Pony and Reserve Champion Part Bred.
