Sky Equine & Canine Physiotherapy I am a qualified Equine Physiotherapist with a keen interest in Kissing Spines horses, offering intensive physio packages. Katie

With many years experience in helping clients and their horses to achieve a more holistic approach to wellbeing through physio. I gained my Diploma Qualification in 2018 to be an ESMT (Equine Sports Massage Therapist) and I trained with The College of Animal Physiotherapy (TCAP). In 2021, I qualified as an Animal Physiotherapist, also through TCAP and in March 2022 I have introduced Salt Therapy u

sing the Newmarket Equine Salt Therapy system as a mobile service. The aim of physiotherapy and ESM (Equine Sports Massage) is to promote a healthy, happy and relaxed equine friend. It is used to help loosen tight muscles, relieve muscle cramp and decrease muscle fatigue. I aim to help restore your horse’s range of movement and flexibility as well as helping to speed up recovery from illness and injury. ESM can be beneficial to any horse, whether they are at the top of their competing discipline or whether they are a happy hacker. Veterinary care and advice should always be sought in a situation where a horse or pony is lame to establish the underlying problem. Physiotherapy and massage can then be used to help restore function where needed. I operate and abide by the current Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. If a treatment is being offered as maintenance, then I can carry on and any major findings will be reported back to your vet so that they are aware for future reference. If your horse is currently under any kind of veterinary care, then permission/consent will be needed before commencing treatments. There may be times when it is not possible for me to carry out a treatment, once the initial assessment has taken place. If this should be the case, I will discuss this fully with you at the time. In March 2022, I trained in Equine Salt Therapy and am able to offer this as a mobile service where I come to your yard. Salt therapy has many benefits for your horse or pony and deals with respiratory, sinus and skin conditions. By using the Newmarket Equine Salt Therapy System I am able to bring you a medical grade salt system to really help with the breathing and skin conditions. Please get in contact if you would like to know more or to book a treatment for your equine friend.

After the success with two further intensive physio and rehab cases now moving to maintenance levels, I will have the capacity to take on two more cases from end of June, early July.

As seen with many of my clients, my intensive packages help to give your horse the best possible chance of recovery and success. Since closing the yard last year, I have helped 5 intensive cases, all with great outcomes so I would love to keep helping more.

If you are facing the decision of rehabbing your horse from surgery or injury, then consider these packages. It can be a great investment for both your horse and you.

Vet consent would be required prior to starting any new plans

Drop me a message if you would like to discuss any plans for your horse.

Have a great weekend guys

Well this week I heard from Billy’s owners with some incredibly good news… Billy has been signed off from his Kissing Spines operation to now be exercised under saddle.

To say that I am extremely happy is an understatement. I’ve been working with Billy and his owners since February and we always said that he would be a slower recovery through rehab as he was on the weaker side all round at the point of surgery. Pre surgery, he hadn’t been happy with ridden work but as with most things with horses it takes a while to narrow down the causes. As soon as it was known what was wrong, he had surgery and started his rehab journey.

From my point of view, I had to work to change his frame, his posture and way of going, whilst being mindful of the ISLD surgery he had.

After getting the consent from the vets to start rehab and intensive physio, I put the plans in place with his owners, ensuring that we were realistic about how much they could do and how much we could push Billy.

We took weekly pictures to keep track of his progress too. This is an important aspect for clients as times do get tough through rehab and it’s very easy to think you’re not making progress and begin to pull back on the exercises. For Billy’s owners, these pictures kept their motivation as they could see the changes from a different perspective.

Billy quite often would throw us curveballs and get little injuries and cuts along the way which needed time to heal too 🙈. Sometimes, I even struggled to tough him without him being grumpy with me but I managed to build trust from Billy and he allowed me to do what was needed.

Billy had weekly physio for around 3 months and then we started to pull back into more maintenance level treatments.

But here we are, 5 months on and Els is back on board and can finally begin ridden rehab which I think is where we will make the biggest impact on how he improves.

I want to say a massive thank you to Els and Becky for allowing me to help you and to trust the process of rehab. I couldn’t be happier for you guys to get the all clear to start ridden rehab

Billys frame and posture has completely changed and he’s learning to carry himself in much better ways. He has built muscle and strength all round and this should continue to improve going forward. To look at his back now, you would never know he has had back surgery - no scarring and no bumps!

Optimus Therapy Tech Lumina was used to aid back tension, reduce scarring and reduce inflammation
Farr and Pursey Equine vets for their excellent care and support throughout the process.

Good morning guys.

I’ve been meaning to post this update for some time but never got round to it.

You may recall back in February/March time, I brought you a very handsome boy called Tommy - an ex racer who is now in his teens. He was starting to struggle with ridden work and so his owner decided to get it investigated.

His vet concluded that he was slightly off behind and had an old injury in front that had been aggravated but gave me the go ahead to devise a rehab plan to strengthen his back which had started to lock up. At his new yard, Tommy was able to relax in himself more and was loving life again.

When I was putting together his rehab plan, I needed to protect his leg issues but allow him to start to use his back in an efficient way - this is hard as it takes out a lot of exercises.

Anyway, Tommy was moved to a yard where his owner Adele could get the support and help needed to implement this rehab plan. Tommy started to gain strength, soundness and was very happy with his new routine. The vet was regularly checking and decided that his back needed extra help so with the help of X-rays, and injections, his back relaxed.

The rehab process regained momentum and Tommy was able to carry his saddle again and take a rider 🥳. This was so lovely to see and really shows that following the plan and trusting the process, can make a real difference.

Tommy will remain on an intensive physio plan to ensure that he is relaxed and can build the muscle and strength in the right places and maintain efficient flexibility.

Watch this space with Tommy. 💕💕🏇

Hi guys

Just a little update for upcoming appts this week. With the soaring temperatures, I have a duty of care to your horse and pony that my treatment won’t make them poorly if they are already struggling with the heat.

If you have treatments booked this week and you are at all worried about them, then please let me know and we will reschedule your appointment. No late notice cancellation fees will apply in this instance.

Doing a treatment can disrupt the circulatory system and other body functions and when the body is already in distress mode from the heat, a treatment can become very unpredictable for them. The last thing I want to do is harm your baby.

Especially if you think dehydration might be happening, we should absolutely reschedule.

Some Signs of dehydration and sun stroke / heat exhaustion -

* the skin pinch test shows the skin not returning to normal
* lethargy and not showing normal ‘happy and content’ signs
* being off food/hay
* drinking more than normal

There are other signs and you should consult your veterinarian for more information or if you are concerned at all

Your horse won’t appreciate the treatment and it also takes a toll on my body too so if you are concerned, please drop me a message and we can reschedule
