Well this week I heard from Billy’s owners with some incredibly good news… Billy has been signed off from his Kissing Spines operation to now be exercised under saddle.
To say that I am extremely happy is an understatement. I’ve been working with Billy and his owners since February and we always said that he would be a slower recovery through rehab as he was on the weaker side all round at the point of surgery. Pre surgery, he hadn’t been happy with ridden work but as with most things with horses it takes a while to narrow down the causes. As soon as it was known what was wrong, he had surgery and started his rehab journey.
From my point of view, I had to work to change his frame, his posture and way of going, whilst being mindful of the ISLD surgery he had.
After getting the consent from the vets to start rehab and intensive physio, I put the plans in place with his owners, ensuring that we were realistic about how much they could do and how much we could push Billy.
We took weekly pictures to keep track of his progress too. This is an important aspect for clients as times do get tough through rehab and it’s very easy to think you’re not making progress and begin to pull back on the exercises. For Billy’s owners, these pictures kept their motivation as they could see the changes from a different perspective.
Billy quite often would throw us curveballs and get little injuries and cuts along the way which needed time to heal too 🙈. Sometimes, I even struggled to tough him without him being grumpy with me but I managed to build trust from Billy and he allowed me to do what was needed.
Billy had weekly physio for around 3 months and then we started to pull back into more maintenance level treatments.
But here we are, 5 months on and Els is back on board and can finally begin ridden rehab which I think is where we will make the biggest impact on how he improves.
I want to say a massive thank you to Els and Becky for allowing me to help you and to trust the process of rehab. I couldn’t be happier for you guys to get the all clear to start ridden rehab
Billys frame and posture has completely changed and he’s learning to carry himself in much better ways. He has built muscle and strength all round and this should continue to improve going forward. To look at his back now, you would never know he has had back surgery - no scarring and no bumps!
Optimus Therapy Tech Lumina was used to aid back tension, reduce scarring and reduce inflammation
Farr and Pursey Equine vets for their excellent care and support throughout the process.
