Riversmeet Veterinary Centre - Atherstone Branch Riversmeet Veterinary Centre is part of Linnaeus Veterinary Ltd (A Mars Company). Our friendly veterinary practice is the largest in Tamworth.

We aim to provide you with the best clinical care for your pet. We have more staff with advanced qualifications and provide more state-of-the-art services than any nearby practice. We have particular experience in orthopaedic surgery (bone, joint and spinal surgery), soft tissue surgery, eye problems (ophthalmology), heart problems (cardiology), skin problems (dermatology), arthritis management an

d cancer treatment. Riversmeet offers many advanced surgical procedures both to our clients and to other veterinary surgeons by referral. These include spinal surgery, fracture repair, joint surgery, laparoscopic key-hole surgery (including spays), arthroscopy and canine total hip replacement. We have two locations for your convenience, Tamworth and Atherstone. Both are RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) accredited small animal practices. The Tamworth surgery is also a registered Veterinary Nurse Training Practice. Riversmeet Veterinary Centre has been established for over 100 years. We offer the choice of eight full time experienced veterinary surgeons who working together provide a wide range of veterinary skills to care for your pet. See our services page for more information. 🐾 What is a microchip, and why is it important? 🐾

A microchip is a tiny electronic chip which is about the size of a grain of rice and is placed under the pet's skin. It contains a unique identification number that is linked to your contact details on a pet microchip database.

But how does it help?

If your pet ever goes missing and is found - a vet, rescue centre or other authorised organisation can scan their microchip. The unique number can then be used to find the details of their registered owner, helping to reunite them with their family. ❤️

Unlike a collar or tag, a microchip provides a permanent form of identification that stays with your pet.

⚠️ One important thing to remember:
A microchip isn't a GPS tracker. It can't tell you where your pet is. And it's only useful if your contact details are kept up to date.

If you move house, change your phone number or your circumstances change, remember to update your details with the microchip database.

In England, by law, dogs must be microchipped by 8 weeks, and cats by 20 weeks.

A tiny chip could make a huge difference if your pet ever gets lost. 🐾💗

Did you know? Guinea pigs can develop ovarian cysts 💔

Meet Peanut 🐾

Peanut is a four year old guinea pig who came to us thanks to her vigilant owner.

Her owner noticed that Peanut had become bloated and seemed a little off her food, so they brought her in to be checked.

Our vets performed an ultrasound, which confirmed that Peanut had ovarian cysts - one of which measured 1.5cm, which is quite large for such a little lady!

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to provide the specialist surgery Peanut needed, so she was referred to an exotics specialist for further treatment. In the meantime, Peanut was provided with pain relief to help keep her comfortable.

Peanut was such a good girl throughout her visit, and we really hope she feels better soon! 💕

A big well done to Peanut’s owner for spotting that something wasn’t quite right and getting her checked. ❤️‍🩹

🐈‍⬛ Why is it so important to bring your cat to the practice in a secure carrier? 🐈‍⬛

We know that some cats don't enjoy travelling, but bringing them to the practice in a secure cat carrier is one of the safest and kindest things you can do.

A carrier helps to:
🐾 Keep your cat safe and prevent them from escaping if they become frightened.
🐾 Reduce stress by providing a familiar, enclosed space where they can feel more secure.
🐾 Protect them from unfamiliar dogs and other animals in the waiting room.
🐾 Make it easier and safer for our team to examine and care for your cat.
🐾 Help ensure a smoother, less stressful visit for everyone.

Even the calmest cat can react unpredictably in a new environment. Loud noises, unfamiliar smells, or a sudden fright can cause them to bolt in an instant.

Spraying the bedding with a cat calming pheromone spray 15–30 minutes before you leave can also help reduce stress.

Thank you for helping us keep your feline friends safe, comfortable, and as relaxed as possible during their visit.

Meet the gorgeous sisters, Bella & Grace 🥰

At 7½ years old, these lovely girls came to the practice together for their dentals. Having your sister by your side is the best kind of comfort when you're feeling a little under the weather. 💕

Bella and Grace were an absolute pleasure to care for. They were so relaxed, happy, and affectionate throughout their stay, soaking up plenty of fuss from the team and melting everyone's hearts with their sweet nature.

We hope you're both enjoying lots of cuddles and well deserved treats at home! ❤️

From frightened rescue to agility champion – well done Rocco! 🐾💙

Some success stories are simply too special not to share.

Rocco came to his family from a Collie Rescue in Wales 18 months ago after previously being given away on Gumtree. He was just 10 months old when he found his forever home.

In those early days, the world was a very scary place for him. He was fearful of people, children, traffic, other dogs and even bicycles. His anxiety was so overwhelming that he wouldn't even get out of the car boot.

His owner had previously lost Bear, their much-loved dream agility dog, very suddenly two years earlier. While no dog could ever replace Bear, Rocco's journey became one of patience, dedication and hope.

Together, they worked tirelessly to help him build confidence. They visited our reception simply to create positive experiences, attended obedience classes, met agility friends and slowly introduced him to new environments at a pace Rocco could cope with. Along the way, they also received fantastic support from Paws a While Dog Shelter, whose encouragement and guidance helped both Rocco and his owner grow in confidence together.

At 18 months old, Rocco began agility training. Fast forward to 3rd July, when he made his debut at the Kennel Club Agility Show at Dog Sport Derby.

With seven grades in Kennel Club agility, dogs normally begin at Grade 1. However, because Rocco's owner is classed as an experienced handler, they had to start at Grade 2 level, competing in the Grade 1–3 Agility class.

And what a debut it was...

🥇 Rocco won the Grade 1–3 Agility class at his very first competition!

From a dog who was too frightened to step out of the car to an agility winner, Rocco's story is a wonderful reminder of what patience, trust and understanding can achieve. It also highlights the incredible difference that rescue organisations, dedicated trainers and a committed owner can make when they work together.

Congratulations to Rocco and his dedicated owner; we're incredibly proud to have been a small part of his journey and can't wait to see what they achieve next! ❤️

🦜 Meet Reg! 🦜

Reg is a beautiful Amazon Green Parrot who recently visited us for a nail clip. 💚

He was an absolute pleasure to have at the practice; such a well-behaved boy who brought plenty of smiles to our team!

It didn't take long for Reg's cheeky personality to shine through. Here's what we learnt about him during his short visit...

🦜 He loves a good chitter-chatter.
🦜 He's a talented impressionist and enjoys copying the staff's chuckles😅
🦜 And when he's had enough of everyone... he likes to take flight towards the nurses, keeping them on their toes (and ducking for cover)! 😂

We're very excited to see you all at our Family Fun Open Day tomorrow!
As glorious as this sunshine is, the heatwave is predicting temperatures of up to 35°C and as always your pet's safety is our number one priority.

While we love seeing you and your dogs, please be sensible and we want to remind you of a few thing:

☀️ Our car park is in full sun and can get very hot
🏡 If you can, leave the pups at home with a fan on
🚫 Strictly no walking to the practice. We are strictly advising that no dogs are walked to the practice over the next week. Pavement temperatures in 35°C heat can easily burn their sensitive paws in seconds.

We will not be operating any clinical services from our Atherstone practice this weekend.
If your pet requires a consultation or an emergency appointment tomorrow, the rest of our team at the Tamworth practice is open and ready to help on 01827 63841
