Do you feel that shift in the air today? โ๏ธ ๐ฌ๏ธ
I don't know about you, but after weeks of sticking to every surface and dodging the heat, my body is craving comfort. Thick socks. Soft trousers. A long soak in a bath. Sinking under a heavy blanket and feeling properly grounded again.
And it made me think about Orla and Kizzie.
For the past month, the heat hasn't just been physically exhausting for them - it's quietly stripped away their primary safe spaces.
Kizzie especially has felt it. More restless than usual, more vocal, unsettled in a way that's hard to put your finger on but impossible to miss if you know her.
Their favourite plush beds, cushions, rugs and my own bed too (!) became heat traps. To stay cool, they were forced onto hard tile floors and laminate. And that matters more than it might seem.
โ๏ธ Lost anchors - The cosy spots where they retreat to decompress, soothe anxiety, or deep-sleep were off-limits.
โ๏ธ No contact comfort. Snuggling up - with us, or with each other - generated too much heat, cutting off that vital co-regulation.
โ๏ธ Constant low-level stress. Elevated heart rates, endless panting, sleeping on hard surfaces. Their sensory tank has been running on empty.
The same is true for rabbits. Without access to deep hay nests, cool hideouts and soft bedding, their nervous systems feel it just as acutely - they're perhaps just quieter about telling us.
So as the cooler air rolls in, expect a collective exhale.
You'll see it happen. The deep, melting side-sigh as your dog sinks back into their fleece bed. The dramatic flop of a bunny nestling into fresh, soft bedding. The return of lap snuggles and joyful zoomies, now that moving doesn't feel like hard labour.
Their nervous systems are finally getting to reset.
And honestly? Same. ๐คโจ
