RAW FEEDING 101
✨️Raw Feeding 101✨️
The vast majority of raw suppliers these days will sell either 'completes' or '80:10:10' raw. Here, we will break down the very simple difference.
80:10:10
This relates to the percentages that make up this mince.
80% muscle meat (this can include lung, heart, and tongue)
10% bone
10% offal. This should then be made up of half liver and half secreting organ (kidney, testicle, spleen, brain)
Complete
Many suppliers use this term for their mince mixes that include muscle meat, bone, offal and fruit & veg. They normally include between 10%-20% fruit & veg.
It is a personal preference as to whether you want to feed dog safe fruit and veg, some people do, and some people don't. Some dogs dont tolerate fruit and veg well, some dont like it at all, whilst some love it. A lot of people also choose to buy 80:10:10 minces and add their own fruit and veg when they wish to (our preference).
Both of these diets are considered balanced by most.
The 80:10:10 rule is a great guide for those who want to DIY feed. This will ensure that your dog gets all of the nutrients that they need.
Feeding raw is not like feeding kibble, whereby you have to stick to 1 brand and sometimes 1 flavour, and slowly transition your dog between brands. With raw feeding, you need to ensure that your dog is having at least 5 different proteins a week, again to ensure all nutrient requirements are met.
It's also a good idea to switch between brands regularly as each brand can use different parts of the animal to make their minces. So using different brands can give your dog even more variety.
Oily fish and eggs are also a must addition to a raw diet.
So even if you aren't looking to fully transition to raw, consider adding some raw oily fish (sprats, herring, sardines) and raw eggs to your dogs diet a couple of times a week.
