📰 Tougher livestock worrying laws now in force

New legislation giving police greater powers to tackle dog attacks on farm animals comes into force in England and Wales today.

The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act removes the previous £1,000 cap on fines, replacing it with unlimited penalties, and extends the scope of the original 1953 law beyond farm fields to include roads and paths used to move stock.

Officers have gained powers to seize suspect dogs and enter premises with warrants to collect forensic evidence.

Dog owners should be aware that animals which run towards livestock or hesitate before recall may fall foul of the law even if no chase takes place.

💬 CLA president Gavin Lane said the change was long overdue.

"Farmers should not have to live in fear of dogs attacking their animals. Yet the stories keep coming: ewes chased into rivers, calves with their jaws ripped off, and animals mauled so badly they have to be put down.

"No farmer can forget finding an animal they've cared for in pain.”

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH A PUPPY
1. Take camera out of case and place case on coffee table.
2. Remove camera case from puppy's mouth.
3. Put magazines back on coffee table.
4. Choose a suitable background for the photo.
5. Put camera on tripod and set focus.
6. Find puppy and remove dirty sock from mouth.
7. Place puppy in pre-focused spot and return to camera.
8. Forget about suitable background and crawl on your knees after puppy.
9. Make smooching noises to get puppy's attention.
10. Get a tissue and wipe nose print from lense.
11. Try to get puppy's attention by squeaking toy held over your head.
12. Get up, find glasses, put them back on, and check camera for damage.
13. Put kettle and make a note to teach puppy to 'sit' and 'stay' in the morning.

Found in the Swan Centre Car Park at the end of classes this evening . . . A black lead with a black and grey handle. Have taken it home for safe keeping. I think it may be Dexters.
