Chronic pain is complex.

It is not always linked to a single injury or condition and can be influenced by factors such as compensation patterns, muscular tension, previous injuries, and mobility changes.

Dogs experiencing chronic pain may show subtle signs including changes in movement, posture, behaviour, performance, or sleep.

Because chronic pain is multifactorial, support often involves a multidisciplinary approach to help improve comfort, mobility, function, and quality of life; and this is where a Galen Myotherapist is an invaluable member of your dog’s team.

This week I've been to see two clients who I first met through Canicross. Both are now retired but they are still young at heart 💖

Maxy Max and Captain Jack both see me for regular maintenance sessions. This is an opportunity to check for any compensatory changes as well as just a time to relax.

If you have an older dog and want to find out more, get in touch 🙏🏼

Such a great visual which explains some of the observations I'm regularly looking for during assessment 🐾

Interesting ❓ with a result which needs all owners to be aware of, not to make people worry but so all owners can consider a proactive approach keeping the joints health 🐾

It's National Love your Pet Day so let's show a little love by making a small home adaptation to help our dogs musculature 💪🏼

So why a raised food bowl????

In the first image you can see how far forward Finn is having to lean to reach the bowl. To do this he is having to stand wide with his rear legs, hyperextend his carpus (wrist), flex his elbows and shoulder WHILST his body is also trying to process the food he's eating.

In the second image Finn has rear legs which are square, reduced flexion of the elbow / shoulder and minimal extension at the carpus allowing his body to focus on food processing rather using energy to stay in the posture of image 1.

Now imagine your dog is compromised in some way or experiencing discomfort but still having to get into this position just to eat.

There are other considerations to take into account when looking at raised bowls, such as, height for your dog and placement, so get in touch if you'd like to find out more.

(If you are interested Finn's bowls is the current one from Aldi which has 4 height adjustments and is sturdier than I expected. I have just added a suction licki mat to the food bowl portion)

This an amazing resource to spend some time taking a deep dive 🐾

Looking for a fantastic family activity that's perfect for dogs of any age or fitness level?

Then unleash your dog's Super Scent-ability!

Turn discarded wrapping paper and boxes into a fun scent-hunting game by hiding their favourite food or toys inside and let the hunt begin.

We all know how much dogs love shredding things and giving them an outlet for their natural instincts which can give them a great mental as well as physical outlet.

Always remember to keep an eye on your dog while they are playing this game!

This is definitely an area I now look at more closely, especially when I'm looking at harnesses.

Just have a look at where the end of your harness sits, especially the lead attachment!

The anticlinal vertebra is the point in your dog’s spine where the angle of the spinous processes (those bony bumps you can feel along the back) changes direction.

In dogs, this is usually found around T11 (the 11th thoracic vertebra).
Above this point, the spinous processes tilt backward, and below it, they tilt forward — forming a kind of “peak” or “hinge” in the spine!

It represents a zone of transition where spinal motion and stress distribution change, which can be relevant when we think about fitting harnesses on dogs.

Keeping our dogs healthy starts with understanding what makes their bodies unique, fromTongue to Tail!
