🐾 Behind the Walk #3 What Actually Happens on a Group Walk? 🐾
From the outside, a group dog walk can look pretty simple…
I pick up the dogs, take them for a walk, and bring them home. Easy, right? 😄
Well… there’s actually a lot more going on behind the scenes!
Before we even set off, I’m thinking about which dogs are going together, their personalities, energy levels and individual needs.
🚐 Then it’s making sure everyone is safely loaded, settled and comfortable.
🐶 Once we arrive, I’m constantly watching body language, play, interactions and how everyone is feeling.
Not every dog wants the same thing and that’s absolutely fine. ❤️
Some love running and playing, while others prefer sniffing, exploring and doing their own thing. 👃🌿
The goal isn’t to make every dog behave the same. It’s to understand what each dog enjoys and needs.
🎓 We also practise everyday skills naturally during our walks recall, staying close, waiting, listening and good manners.
👀 Throughout the walk I’m asking:
Are they happy?
Is play balanced?
Does anyone need space?
Is anyone tired or overstimulated?
Sometimes I let them enjoy their adventures. Sometimes I change the pace, give a dog space or move the group on.
💧 And then there’s water, muddy paws, weather checks, cleaning up and making sure everyone gets home safely!
And that’s before the next round of collections! 😂
A group walk isn’t simply an hour of exercise.
It’s supervision, experience, behaviour management, training and making sure every dog has a safe and enjoyable experience.
So when you see a van full of happy, muddy faces coming home, just remember…
There’s a lot of work that goes into making that walk look effortless. ❤️🐾
