Did you know that mast cell tumours are one of the most commonly diagnosed skin tumours in dogs? These tumours are often seen as round, hairless lumps that are prone to inflammation and ulceration, but can have many different appearances including soft lumps under the skin. They can grow anywhere on the body and can range from completely benign to highly aggressive. If caught early mast cell tumours are often very treatable, but rapid diagnosis is key.

Did you know that soft tissue sarcomas are a commonly diagnosed tumour in older dogs? These tumours grow as soft lumps under the skin and can look and feel like fatty lumps. Soft tissue sarcomas can be much more aggressive however, and although they grow slowly, they can grow very large causing discomfort. They are most often found on the torso and legs. Early diagnosis gives the best chance for treatment, so always get new lumps checked by your vet.

Did you know that mammary tumours are more common in female dogs that haven't been spayed? They often start as pea-sized lumps in the mammary (breast) tissue but can grow large and ulcerate. It is not uncommon for dogs to develop mammary tumours in multiple teats at the same time. There are many different types of mammary tumours, around 50% of which are aggressive, but more even the benign types can transform to become aggressive over time. It is recommended that any mammary masses are removed promptly for analysis, and this is usually curative.

Most pets will develop a lump on or under the skin at some point in their life, and some pets may develop several. It is impossible to know for certain what a lump is just by looking at it.

Many different types of tumour can look and feel identical, especially those that sit under the skin. However, making sure you feel your pet every few months will help you to understand what is normal, so you can spot any lumps and bumps early on.

When checking your pet take things slow, and stop if they seem unduly concerned at any point.

๐Ÿ’š Don't forget we run our lumps and bumps clinics, you can contact the practice on 02837526777 to get booked in ๐Ÿ’š
