Klaus ♥️
Klaus is a regular here at Star who is having issues with proprioception. He is an ex- flyball player and he is the gentlest most lovely boy.

Proprioception is a sense, it enables your body to feel its movements and position. For example, you can probably scratch your head with your eyes closed- you are not using your vision for this, you are using your proprioception. Your body remembers where your head is to enable you to scratch it.
We find that this ability is often reduced in the limbs of our rehab and older patients. Particularly neurological and myelopathy cases.

To aid this, we often use ‘bands’, sometimes a scrunchie, sometimes a bit of vet wrap, etc. This helps the patient to sense where their limbs are and therefore use them more effectively instead of dragging limbs or knuckling the floor.

Klaus decided he wanted to have chicken legs so his proprioception bands reflect just that ♥️

Something a little different:
‘Sonic’ was found with an infected and necrotic leg a few months ago. He was underweight and not very well at all.

Luckily for him, he was taken in by our wonderful VCA Claire and her family. Claire’s mum is an ex Vet Nurse and now spends a lot of her time rehabbing and caring for wildlife.
After a few unsuccessful treatments, they realised that Sonic’s leg could not be saved and the kindest thing would be to ease his pain and amputate the diseased leg.

He came to Star for his surgery a few weeks ago and we are pleased to report that he is now thriving on 3 legs!
Sonic will never be able to be released into the wild but he has a forever home with Claire and her family.

He was so brave for his operation and was waddling around and eating very quickly after the procedure.
