Grace is John’s daughter she joined us on reception at the end of March, she with us until August.

🐾 Ralph 🐾
Ralph was in with us last week as he had a urethral obstruction also known as a urinary tract blockage. This meant Ralph was unable to empty his bladder.
The blockage can result in life threatening consequences such as electrolyte abnormalities which can then affect the heart and cause kidney failure and bladder rupture.
Symptoms of a urethral obstruction
• Bloody urine
• Urgency to urinate (more trips to the litter box)
• Straining to urinate
• Meowing loudly and often as it in pain or distress
• No urine production/ only few drops produced
A urinary tract blockage in a cat is a medical emergency, please contact the clinic immediately if you suspect this.

Is your dog going on their holidays too?
Have they got their booster and kennel cough for kennels or day care?
Kennel cough is a condition in dogs that results from inflammation of the upper airways. It is caused by several different strains of bacteria and viruses.
Most cases are mild and do not require treatment, however a small proportion of dogs may require treatment if they have weakened immune systems.
If you wish for your dog to attend a boarding kennel it is a requirement for them to be vaccinated for kennel cough.
You must have your pet vaccinated in plenty of time before they are due to attend the boarding kennel.
This allows for immunity to develop. Vaccinating your dog too close to going into kennels means your dog will still be at risk of catching kennel cough despite vaccination.
It takes at least 2 weeks for the immunity to develop, so please make your appointment 2-3 weeks in advance of going in to kennels.
Immunity lasts one year after receiving the vaccination so you can vaccinate your dog well in advance of going into kennels.

Update: 1.6.24 at 3.50pm. A water sample taken by Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs today at Rea’s Wood, has shown that the water is back within normal limits.

Daisy was in today for vaccination and microchip.
Microchipping your pet plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of our furry companions.
Why is it so important to have your pet microchipped?
Microchips significantly increase the likelihood of reuniting owners with their pets if they go missing or are lost.
Microchips provide a permanent and reliable form of identification in the event their collars or tags are removed or lost.
Facilities equipped with microchip scanners can use microchip forums to quickly identify the owner’s contact information from the unique identification number.
Additionally, microchips are tamper-proof, making it difficult for anyone to alter the information associated with the chip.
You legally need to have your dog microchipped to obtain a dog licence.
It is also extremely important not only to make sure your pet is microchipped but to ensure it is REGISTERED.

Last week in Firmount we said goodbye to Claire our head veterinary nurse who has been with us for over 22 years. Thursday 4th April was Claire’s last day we enjoyed an extended tea break together which was emotional for all. Together as a practice we all enjoyed a meal on Friday night to say farewell to Claire. We are sure a lot of you know Claire as she has always been a friendly face around the clinic.Claire started in Firmount at aged 16 in 2002 as an animal nursing assistant. Claire was the first vet nurse to complete her veterinary nursing training at Firmount through Greenmount college. Claire has guided many students over the years through the same course she completed.Claire has been a great friend to many over the years and will be missed. We wish her good luck in her future endeavours! It was impossible to pick one photo that reflected 22 years at Firmount!!! ❤️🥰

Summer is fast approaching ☀️ ... ... which means these little creatures are becoming a more common sighting. Make sure your pet is fully covered for ticks as they can spread serious diseases such as lymes disease and babesiosis. Why not call into the clinic and speak to someone for more information or advise!
