🐴🌿WORMING🌿🐴
Worming is vital this time of the year with high turnovers of horses sharing grazing. Keeping a clean pasture is a one way of lowering exposure to worms but a parasite treatment may also be necessary.

The practice stocks a variety of wormers including Equest, Equest Pramox, Noromectin, Embotape, Strongid-P and lab. f***l egg counts in the case of 'wormer resistance'. Call in if you feel your equine pal may benefit from a worming treatment.

🐰EASTER TOXINS🐰

It is nice to have a little colour after a long winter. Easter and springtime decorations (and edibles) liven the scenery, but also pose a potential hazard to pets. Who knew that plastic Easter grass could be dangerous, even deadly?

Spring is a great time to take an inventory of potential pet hazards. Here are a few quick tips on what to watch for this spring.

Easter Lily (and related Lily plants)
The Easter Lily is a common finding this time of year. This plant, and related plants in the lily family, are highly toxic to cats if ingested. The first signs seen are vomiting and lethargy, and if untreated, may progress to kidney (renal) failure and death. Please call us immediately if you suspect that your cat has eaten any part of a lily plant. Another spring flower often used in cut flower arrangements, daffodils, are also toxic to cats.

Easter grass
Cats love anything that moves. Easter grass moves easily in the breeze, makes interesting sounds, and, for some cats, it is simply irresistible and must be eaten. Stringy things like Easter grass or tinsel at Christmas, pose a deadly threat if ingested, creating something called a Linear Foreign Body. The first signs seen, aside from the material being visible from the mouth or a**s, are vomiting or straining to defecate and a painful abdomen. Trying to pull out visible grass or string is not recommended, as this can cause more damage if the piece is long and trapped far inside the body. Call us if you suspect that your cat has sampled the Easter grass. While Linear Foreign Bodies are more common in cats, dogs may also ingest non-food material, and the same rules apply.

Chocolate
This is typically more of a dog hazard, as many dogs have a sweet tooth, a great nose, and the determination to find chocolate -- hidden or not, but cats may consume chocolate too. The toxic components in chocolate are theobromine and caffeine, and the level of toxicity is based on the type and quantity of chocolate consumed. Different types of chocolate have different amounts of theobromine and caffeine; dark chocolate contains the highest concentrations and white chocolate contains the least. Early clinical signs are vomiting, diarrhoea and trembling.

Xylitol
It is important to note that xylitol, an artificial sweetener used in many candies, chewing gums and baked goods, is potentially very toxic to dogs and ferrets.

If you think your pet has eaten something it shouldn't or found themselves amongst toxic plants, please don't hesitate to give us a call 🐾

We will be closed Monday 18th but emergency calls will go through to our out of hours line.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Assisi Animal Sanctuary have an urgent need for dog fosterers.

Sadly, after 25 years of serving our local community and providing refuge and rehoming to more than 50,000 animals, following a noise complaint, we are currently unable to take in any more dogs at the Sanctuary at Conlig.

While we are working with local authorities to try and resolve this as quickly as possible, and seeking to avail of alternative accommodation for our dogs, we urgently need your help.

To continue our mission of providing help for the helpless, we are appealing for people who can offer a dog a loving short-term home to contact us to enquire about becoming a dog fosterer.

Assisi can provide everything they will need during their stay – food, bedding, toys etc. We can also cover any medical and/or veterinary care that may arise.

Please SHARE and if you can help, please PM the page or email [email protected] for more information.

**UPDATE: Dash has been rehomed and is now part of a member of our staffs family, along with his new sisters Sybil and Lucie.
💙DASH💙
Baby Dash is also on the search for a new home. He came in with mummy Dana and is now on the lookout for a family to play with.
We estimate he is around 4-5 months and is the most lovable boy.

Dash and Dana could be rehomed together but we would strongly recommend a castrate or spay.

This lovely girl is ready for a new home. She is the sweetest little cat and we estimate she is around 1 year old.
Dana has a clean bill of health, all she is asking for is a home to call her own.

🩺💊REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS💊🩺

Please phone in advance if you need to order repeat medications for your pet. We would ask that you give us a minimum of 24 hours notice before the collection of any prescriptions. This gives us time to check records and dispense medication. This may take slightly longer if we have to order in specific medicines.

We would also ask that you give us a call at least one hour in advance before collecting flea and worm treatment. If you are unsure of your pets weight, please bring them along so we dispense accordingly.

If your pet is on long-term medication we will need to re-assess them every 3-6 months depending on the condition they are being treated for. This is will require the booking of a consultation with a vet.

Please take all this into consideration on the run up to Christmas.

Thank you! 🐾

🐾POST OP. MEDICAL SHIRTS🐾
The perfect alternative to the traditional 'cone', that can be used both after surgery and in case of medical conditions such as allergies to protect ointments from being licked off.

If you're booked in for an operation and would like one of these suits on post-surgery rather than an e-collar let us know.
Or if you feel you pet would benefit from the use of one to minimise scratching, biting or excessive licking, give us a call.

We stock these in S, M, L and XL dog as well as XS dog/cat.

🐾🧦SOCK DONATIONS🧦🐾
Have you done a clear out and don't know what to do with your old socks? Has your child outgrown their baby socks?
Don't bin them! We can use them!

When animals are under anaesthetic their temperature can drop, prolonging recovery time. Putting socks on patients while they undergo surgery can reduce this without getting in the way of the procedure. And of course we want all poorly pets to be as cosy as possible during their stay with us.

PLEASE BRING US YOUR SOCKS!
(Preferably without holes and clean of course)

We are also currently taking donations of newspaper and blankets for our inpatients.

Thank you 😸

17/11/2021

Hi everyone!
It's come to that time of the year again when we are asking for extra donations of blankets and newspapers for our inpatients.

If any one has any old newspapers, towels or blankets that they no longer need we would greatly appreciate if they could be dropped off at the practice.

Thank you! 🐾

**we do not need donations of quilts or pillow cases as this time**
