The quadrants in simple terms!

Science???

I believe science has no place in dictating dog training because so much of the "facts" are often manipulated for the outcome that certain people desire. Namely those that pay for the studies of have a benefit in certain outcomes.

I abhor the word "punishment" as a term for dog training because it is misused and misunderstood. More than 90% of the time a dog does not deserve "punishment" as the term is truly defined: pun·ish·ment
/ˈpəniSHm(ə)nt/
noun
1. the infliction or imposition of a restriction, financial penalty, form of suffering, or other undesired consequence for an offense.

Instead what we should offer is guidance, correction and structure / information.

I believe "scientists" should redefine the word punishment in their. presentations . So many dog trainers are caught up in complicating dog training for one reason or another.

I truly believe that dogs are simple creatures and communicating with them and helping them succeed is about "connecting" MORE and science LESS. It's about a connection with the animal and communicating - not scientific nonsense.

Dogs are not science experiments... stop treating them as such. They are living caring creatures that deserve better. They deserve our love, our compassion and YES, the guidance to know what's right and wrong. That involves corrections and information.

All that being said, I had an amazing call with my good friend from across the POND James Penrith and, after much venting about the downturn of our industry, we thought we would introduce our "well researched - well presented" theory on scientific approach to dog training that most anyone can grasp.

Frequently I see this, owners reinforcing unwanted behaviours without even realising it!

Especially within the home environment!

Remember reinforcement value is decided by the dog , positive or negative! Every dog likes and dislikes different things!

If you want your dog calm in the house and you are causing consistent overstimulation through too much fuss, hyping your dog up all the time etc it’s never going to happen! Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing better than fussing your dog and spending time with them, it’s how you do it and the signals you give that really matter!

Personally with my dogs I teach them to switch off within the house and only fuss/give attention/affection when calm behaviour is displayed, this doesn’t mean their calm behaviour results in me hyping them up, I meet them where I want them, relaxed and calm. There is a time and a place to hype your dog up and the house isn’t one of them!

This also does not mean I don’t ever fuss my dogs! I do! Just in the right place and at the right time! The house is for chilling out and it’s my job to show this!

If I hyped them up when I got back from being out they would use the house as a play park quite literally! They also wouldn’t have the ability to switch off and would be constantly overstimulated both in the house and out!

Remember it’s your job to guide and show your expectations clearly! Clarity and consistency is everything!
