As the sun sets on 2025 and the frost gently covers the land in a delicate blanket, we wanted to share a summary of what has happened at Porthdy in the last twelve months.
As every year, we lambed, we harvested hay and delivered our meet boxes to our customers but it is so much more than that. Darren made sure that the ewes are healthy, rested and ready to meet our new ram Kev. That meant regular husbandry, taking care of the fields and rotating the sheep to really ensure that they get as much good grass as possible. He procured a new ram, who is friendly and really mellow, which our girls clearly liked because all of them ended up with green bottoms!π.
In the meantime, I focused on smoking meat. My dad was an absolute pro when it came to smoking but as a typical teenager, I paid very little attention to the curing and smoking process always enjoying the end product and now, when I'm older (not necessarily wiser), I wish I knew how he made the hams and meats (and fish) so blooming delicious! I'm getting there and I hope that soon I'll be able to share that with our customers too π.
This year, we planted just under 900 trees and shrubs! It was not easy but we did it! This is not just our bit for the environment because planting more trees allows us a healthy rotation and maintenance of the numbers of trees on the land. This is not just a case of clean air. Trees provide natural shelter for the animals but also protect us from adverse weather conditions like strong winds and flooding.
Last year the weather did not allow us to harvest hay but this year the harvest was plentiful and with the help of our friend Henry, we absolutely bossed it- winter is sorted-we can even help a friend in need.
We have a new addition to our canine family-Bobeena Bobinsky joined the gang in September and boy, is she an addition! She is a little lady with an attitude, who has outrun my Monty and had faced the the cows head-on!!!
Darren saw the cows off- he bottle-fed all four of them and saw them grow from scrawny little calves into beautiful heifers!
As the cows grew, so did our lambs and, just like every year, Darren did the deliveries of our our grass fed lamb boxes and lamb sausages. This year, I decided to pay a little tribute to our Caribbean roots and desperately tried to create the perfect jerk seasoning for our lamb sausages. Note to self, it is not as easy as it seems- I spent two months adding and omitting spices and herbs, changing quantities and tweaking what I thought was 'almost there'. Well, and the end result? -you may ask... I'm almost there!!!π.
We are now ready for the new year. We will continue doing what we do. We have some new ideas and plans and we will take you on our journey with us so stay tuned, but for now, WE WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR- DARE TO DREAM, DREAMS DONT HAVE TO BE HUGE, LITTLE ONES MATTER TOO. ..and here is 2025 in pictures π
