Hywi 🧡🧡

After a fall and a few bad experiences, it was my favourite ginge who helped me find my trust again. He reminded me that riding could still be fun — not just scary. He might be a bit quirky and nappy, but honestly, he’s worth his weight in gold. The older, less “fancy” ones really do teach you the most.

I haven’t ridden him in months — life’s been hectic and I’ve been caught up with Mac — but I had the best time getting back on him today. As always, he looked after me. He’s the one who gave me confidence to ride ba****ck, got me into groundwork, and taught me some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned.

He’ll always be my favourite ginge 🧡

📣 Now Taking Bookings – Freelance Groom Available

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I’m now available for freelance grooming work.

I offer reliable, experienced help with day-to-day horse care and yard cover.

I’ve previously worked in riding schools, livery yards, and private yards, and I also have horses of my own – so I understand how much care and attention they need.

Based in Buckinghamshire and mainly covering the surrounding areas, but happy to travel further with a contribution towards mileage.

Please get in touch if you’re interested or feel free to share with anyone who might be looking. Thank you! 🐴✨

☀️ Dealing with Horses in the Heat ☀️
When the temperatures rise, it’s important we do everything we can to keep our horses comfortable and safe. Here are some top tips for managing horses in hot weather:

🌅 Ride early or late – Stick to early mornings or late evenings when it’s cooler.
🌳 Provide shade – Make sure they have access to shelter or natural shade.
💧 Plenty of fresh water – Horses need constant access to clean, cool water.
🪰 Fly protection – Use fly spray regularly, and consider fly masks to keep the horse flies at bay.
🚿 Cool baths – A hose down or sponge bath can really help lower their body temperature.
🏠 Stable during peak heat – Some horses are more comfortable stabled during the hottest hours of the day, however, regularly check the temperature of the stable as they can heat up quickly if in direct sunlight.
🧪 Check for dehydration – You can do a quick skin pinch test: gently pinch the skin on their neck and see how quickly it returns to normal. If it stays raised for more than a second or two, they may be dehydrated.

Keeping a close eye on them and adjusting your routine goes a long way. Stay cool and safe out there — for you and your horses! 💚

Getting to my pony, Mac 🐴
When we first got Mac, even the basics were a real struggle. Leading him in from the field was a daily challenge — he’d bolt, drag you around, and had no sense of personal space (leaving me with broken fingers🙈). He couldn’t stand still to be tacked up or rugged, and he wouldn’t go in front of anyone walking with him on a hack. Even something as simple as fly spray would send him into a panic — he’d run straight through you to get away.

So we stripped everything right back. No pressure, no expectations — just calm, quiet, consistent work to help him feel safe and understood.

Now? He hacks confidently in front, walks in from the field (most of the time!) without a fuss, stands calmly to be tacked up, and even lets me put rugs on him loose in the field. He stands for fly spray without a headcollar like it’s no big deal.

He’s a sensitive boy, but he’s come such a long way — proof that slow, kind, steady work really does make all the difference 💚
