Many of you will remember Duffy, the gentle giant with a heart of gold who was a firm favourite at the riding school. In 2021, Duffy began a new chapter when he left the hustle and bustle of school life to enjoy a more peaceful pace with his loving new owner—our very own instructor, Kate.

Since then, Duffy has been thoroughly enjoying life with Kate. Swapping the busy lesson schedule for a more relaxed routine, he’s thriving under her care. Together, they regularly take part in Dressage Anywhere competitions—where Duffy continues to shine and make us all proud.

Although he didn’t pick up any prizes in the Irish Draught series, Duffy has found his stride in the veteran horse competitions, which they enter every month. In January, he scored 60.8% in Novice 1 and brought home a first place rosette. He’s also earned three scores over 60% at Preliminary level, qualifying them for the championship at that level. February brought even more success, with a second place and their highest score yet—an impressive 65.22%.

Kate and Duffy are now working toward qualifying for the Novice championship, with hopes of completing an Elementary test before the end of the year. It’s always so special to see one of our school horses go on to enjoy a fulfilling next chapter, especially when they stay within the riding school family. We couldn’t be happier for Duffy and Kate—what a perfect pair. 💛

🐴💙 Tack Fit: Because Our Horses Deserve the Best 💙🐴

We believe our horses deserve the very best care—and that starts with making sure their tack fits just right.

✨ Why is tack fit so important?
Just like people, horses come in all shapes and sizes—and their tack (like saddles, bridles, and girths) needs to match their body to avoid discomfort. Poorly fitting tack can lead to:

Sore spots or rubbing
Muscle soreness
Resistance when being ridden
Long-term health issues

🐎 And here’s something not everyone knows: Horses change shape over time!
As they get older, build muscle, lose weight, or gain condition, their bodies shift—and that means their tack might need to be adjusted too. That’s why regular checks are so important!

How do we make sure it fits?
✅ Our amazing team of instructors and staff check tack regularly before lessons to make sure everything is comfortable, safe, and adjusted properly for each horse.
✅ We also have a fantastic professional saddler who visits regularly to assess each horse’s saddle fit and make expert adjustments as needed.

From saddle position to girth tension, we take every detail seriously—because our horses work hard, and they deserve to feel their best every day. 🐎💕

Got questions about how tack is fitted? Your instructor is always happy to explain—we love helping our riders learn about care and welfare!

🎉 Happy 21st Birthday, Lenny! 🐴🎂

Wishing a very happy birthday to Lenny, one of our lovely retired riding school horses, who turns 21 today!

Lenny still lives here at Shardeloes and is enjoying a well-deserved quieter life with his sharer. He’s loving his hacks and even takes part in horse agility—proving he’s still got it!

Here’s to a day full of treats and cuddles 💛🥕

Meet Ryan! Ryan has been at Shardeloes Farm since 2017, working as a groom on both our riding school and livery yards, as well as an instructor. He has been riding for 10 years. He didn’t grow up with the dream of working with horses, however found the love for it through his family having horses of their own.

Ryan says his favourite riding school pony is Coco, “because she is just an angel”. His favourite thing about working at Shardeloes Farm is being able to spend his whole day around the horses, there’s nothing quite like it! His favourite job is poo picking (Ryan’s beige flag!), he says he finds it therapeutic! His least favourite job is cleaning the water drinkers, as he always manages to end up soaking wet.

Ryan has his own horse, Bazz! He bought Bazz in 2017 from the riding school, and says having him is like having an oversized dog. Bazz loves belly scratches in particular and enjoys being fussed over. Ryan is particularly proud of becoming a coach, and having the opportunity to coach the next generation of riders! In the summer months, Ryan travels to American and works in the American Summer Camps, teaching the campers how to ride and taking care of the large herd of horses at the camp. Go Ryan!

Meet Murphy! Murphy is 15 years old, standing at 15.2hh. He is a firm favourite amongst our staff and clients. He joined the riding school in 2022 and is great at his job. He loves hacking, mounted games and is a dressage pro too!

Despite his size, he is just a big baby. He adores being groomed and fussed over, will do anything you ask for a treat, and always tries hard for his riders. He took part in our Pony Club C test and sailed over a course of showjumps, and in 2023 he came 2nd with Niamh in our arena cross country competition! He does also LOVE to nap, he is often found in the field or stable having a good snooze.

He’s a superstar and proves that cobs can do it too! Tell us your favourite thing about Murphy in the comments!
