The size of the bean I removed today from a horse that I was only supposed to be just bathing he went for a wee and I spotted it so I couldn’t leave the poor boy with this so a quick removal and good deed done for the day the owner didn’t even know that they could get such a thing so she was very surprised and I’m sure the horse was very relived 😊

Ragwort - it's taking over!

Does the field or the roadside verge near where your horse is kept look like this picture? If the answer is YES then YOU need to take action. As well as pulling up and burning these toxic weeds from your own paddocks, you should report significant infestations nearby. Legislation in the Weeds Act 1959 and Ragwort Control Act 2003 means that the responsible authority must act to remove the weed from near pastures and hay meadows. Offenders may be private landowners or more likely the Highways Authority and Network Rail.

Make a note of the postcode or map reference and go to https://www.facebook.com/The-Ragwort-Alert-Group-200447270671322/ or you can email John Calder, our local Ragwort Alert Group coordinator, on [email protected] for advice.

IMPORTANT FOR OXFORDSHIRE DOG OWNERS

I've just seen this posted locally and wanted people to be aware - I don't believe there is reason to panic but to be careful and keep a close eye on your dog and most importantly wash down after every walk - better to be safe than sorry.

"As most dog owners might well be doing extended dog walks over the Easter weekend I thought it important to notify you of a message I got sent today. I have received notification of a local dog who has very sadly passed away from Alabama Rot. This dog was from Oxford and the owner had been walking their dog in Freeland near Long Hanborough.

Alabama Rot is still VERY rare but can be fatal if early signs go unnoticed. It is worth ensuring you wash your dog’s paws as soon as possible after walks, especially when walking them in muddy woodland. Regular checks of their bodies for skin sores, commonly found below the knees & elbows, are early indicators of possible kidney failure (but also triggers of other less fatal diseases).

It is still important to clarify how rare this is but to give you the information to make your own judgement call.

MORE INFORMATION IS ON THE LINK BELOW: http://www.vets4pets.com/stop-alabama-rot/

Mare Beans, following on from my post on the subject of cleaning and checking for gelding beans I have been asked often about mare beans and how to clean them.
