This lovely little Maltese came in for his first ever groom today. We met up a couple of weeks ago for an introduction and today was the big day! The first groom is very important as it sets expectations for future sessions, so everything was very slow and we did what we could without causing stress. He wasn't keen on the hairdryer so I mostly cuddled him dry -what a hardship πŸ’—! Here he is, doing his Enlightened Buddha impersonation!

Handsome Murphy came in today for a pre-holiday tidy up. Poor lad suffers from allergies and his mums have been advised by their vet to avoid any sort of shampoo or 'product' on his skin.
I was a bit concerned that I wouldn't get a nice finish on his coat, but I neednt have worried! He had a good scrub in fresh Cumbrian water, a cool blow dry to straighten those curls and brush out dozens of grass seeds, followed by a banded comb strip of the jacket with scissor finish to tidy and blend the longer hair into his legs, which were trimmed short to keep him clean. Wig trimmed out of his GORGEOUS eyes. Have a great holiday beautiful boy!

Little Norfolk terrorist....I mean Terrier! Akira. She's such a lovely girl but man, does she hate having her legs and feet touched πŸ₯²
Her guardian is doing fantastic work with her at home and although progress is slow, I'm delighted to say we're getting there!
When I first met her last Christmas, her guardian was worried that she would have to have Akira sedated to have her feet and nails done. Yesterday I managed to ....well. At least they've been tidied a bit. And she very tentatively let me trim her pads which is major progress.
I never use force or over-restrain and try to limit the time a dog is on the table. Humanity before vanity every time.
Well done lil girl, you're a star Akira!

And here she is! Urban Rover Neva Malte-chon is home and building up energy for her next foray into the filth! She'll be so much easier to keep clean and dry now, and those horrible brushing sessions will be much more comfortable. I had to shave a nasty felted bit close to her skin where her tiny little harness was rubbing, but now that's gone she's an easy maintenance little dog. For now! I recommend a 4 week grooming schedule for active dogs with high maintenance coats like Neva's, so see you next month little Grub! πŸ₯°

Dog or Guinea pig?!
Tiny Neva Malte-chon (aka 'Grub') is in today for her first Spring clean up!
Neva's silky Maltese coat is prone to tiny knots, so she's 'knot' keen on being brushed. Despite her tiny-ness, she'll be with me all morning, building trust and having a bit of fun. It's important that all those knots are completely brushed or trimmed out before I start styling her, so that she stays as still as possible around those sharp scissors and gets a nice even finish .
Neva likes nothing better than getting ABSOLUTELY FILTHY, so we are trying out a nice short 'do today....

Old paw Oscar had his first visit to the Big Van today. At 10 years old, and on a 6-week grooming schedule, he's seen it all before!Oscar is so used to all the tools that he offered me his paw when I showed him the nail clippers! 😍
A lovely chilled experience for us both 😊
After his bath with Hownd organic aromatherapy shampoo and conditioner (using my new quiet and gentle shower) he was fluff dried - totally unphased by the blaster- so he was dry in 15 minutes. Then it was time for a nice lie down while I gave him a gentle brush out before the big trim.

It's so important that your doggy is used to the grooming process so that, particularly as they get older, the process can be completed as quickly as possible. My tools are razor sharp, and a dog who dances about risks injuring themselves and/or me. Legs, feet and nails can be particularly difficult and, if your doggy is a groom-a-phobe, try to get them used to having those areas touched by gently stroking them every day, and rewarding calm responses with high-value treats (food or cuddles). Then start stroking with BLUNT scissors and rewarding again.
Grooming should be a calm, pampering experience, not fraught with anxiety and danger.
WELL DONE to Oscar and his guardians!

Meet beautiful senior boy Brandy Jackapoo! Poor Brandy's guardian has been struggling to maintain this awkward mix-breed coat, so she asked me to sort him out. A full de-matt and clip, 2 x warm washes in spa treatment shampoo and conditioner, hand scissor tidy up (and gentle bathing of that sore eye!), and a finish off with a lovely cologne that matches the shampoo, and he's looking very handsome and obviously feeling better!
It's so important to keep up with brushing, matts can hide and cause skin problems, lead to dreadful bruising, general discomfort and can retain dampness that leads to further skin infections.
