Met the Team Monday - Claire

Many of you will already know our amazing Head Nurse Claire. Having worked in the veterinary world for the last 12 years, including general practice in Strathaven and an out of hours centre in Falkirk, Claire joined the Mckenzie's team in 2022 and was promoted to Head Nurse in March 2024.

As Head Nurse, Claire's duties include decision making around the running of theatre, the prep room and kennel area, organising the nurses' rota and holidays as well as being involved in training our student nurses and doing all the usual jobs our nurses undertake such as anaesthesia, caring for inpatients, consulting, lab work, taking blood samples, placing intravenous cannulae, administration of medicines, dentistry, radiography, helping the vets and schedule 3 surgical procedures under veterinary direction - certainly a very busy job!

Claire's dedication to caring for all the patients that come to Mckenzie Vets shines through, and she is constantly looking for ways to make our superb standards of care even better. For example, she is responsible for the introduction of intravenous infusions of local anaesthetic in addition to the usual painkillers as a standard procedure for all dogs having spay surgery to make them as comfortable as possible during and after their operation.

Claire qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2021 and achieved an NCert in Medical Nursing in January 2025. Her favourite part of her job is nursing medical patients and intensive care.

Before working with animals, Claire had an equally compassionate employment working in health care looking after the elderly.

Claire lives locally with her husband and gorgeous staffie Cesar. Her hobbies include going for lovely dog walks with Cesar, catching up with friends and going on holiday to sunny destinations.

Met the Team Monday - Kate

Sunny Kate is our most recent vet having joined the team in April this year bringing with her a wealth of experience, a love of caring for patients and a wicked sense of humour which keeps us all laughing.

Kate is originally from Pennsylvania where she studied Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at Penn State University before coming to Scotland and graduating from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh in 2019.

After graduating, Kate worked in small animal practices in Strathaven, Glasgow and Pennsylvania before joining Mckenzies. She enjoys all aspects of being a GP vet but has a special passion for feline medicine and all things cat.

She fell in love with Scotland instantly but has to admit she prefers the weather back in the States. Her hometown of Mechanicsburg has an annual tradition of dropping a giant wrench every Hogmanay!

Kate adopted a cat in vet school who she called Tesco because it was the only word she could say on a Scottish accent! She lives with her husband and Tesco and outside of work hobbies include golfing, kayaking and exploring Scotland.

Mckenzie's Brave Pet Award this week goes to Cheeky, a Barred Parrakeet who is recovering after fracturing his leg.

Our vet Alison had to use some imagination in coming up with a splint that was strong but light enough for the little bird who weighs only 60 grams. A combination of a cotton bud and a paper clip provided the perfect solution and Cheeky is living up to his name, not letting anything hold him back!

Met the Team Monday - Abi

Lovely Abi joined the Mckenzie's Team in November last year and many of you will have had the pleasure of meeting her. She is very caring and shows a quiet dedication for all her patients.

Abi graduated from Glasgow Vet School in 2019 and worked in a small animal practice in London for 6 years before relocating back to Scotland.

She loves getting to know her patients and enjoys many aspects of the job but has a particular interest in performing ultrasound examinations and working up medicine cases.

At home, Abi has a working cocker spaniel called Ovie who she loves talking for long walks with her husband and young son.

In her spare time, when not busy with work, Abi enjoys hill walking, playing tennis and baking.
