The upcoming heatwave is a real concern for outdoor pets, please bring them indoors this week ❤️
The upcoming weather forecast is understandably causing a lot of worry for Karen and other pet parents. With temperatures in some areas—including our own—predicted to hit a staggering 40°C, we want to reassure you that all our guests at Hug A Bunny are safe and comfortable in our fully air-conditioned hotels.
However, we know that not everyone has access to air conditioning, and extreme heat poses a very real risk to our beloved small furries.
Prioritize Shade: Ensure your pets have access to shade throughout the entire day. If they are outdoors, provide a well-ventilated shelter out of direct sunlight. Avoid plastic hides, as they trap heat like an oven.
Bring Them Inside: If you can, bring your rabbits or guinea pigs indoors during the hottest parts of the day, as indoor environments are much easier to keep cool.
Encourage Airflow: Ensure their area has good air circulation. If you are using a fan, make sure they can easily move away from the airflow if they want to.
Hydration is Key: Provide fresh, cool water and check bottles or bowls frequently to ensure they aren't empty or warm. Please do not add ice cubes directly to their drinking water, as this can shock their systems.
DIY Cooling Packs: Freeze plastic water bottles, wrap them securely in a thin tea towel, and place them in their enclosure for them to lean against.
Cool Surfaces: Place wet towels, pet-safe cooling mats, ceramic tiles, or concrete slabs in their space for them to lie on.
Low-Energy Enrichment: Set up a hay enrichment area in the coolest spot available. Sprinkle their favorite forage into the hay.
This is something we never thought we would have to say, but with the heat reaching dangerous, life-threatening levels for outdoor pets, please consider using indoor cages or puppy pens temporarily.
Even if it means smaller housing than usual for a few days, keeping them indoors with plenty of hay, fresh water, and cool enrichment will keep them safe. For this week, prioritizing their temperature control is the most sensible choice we can make.
