Planning a road trip with your furry friend this summer?

Here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey for both of you:

Hydration is Key: Always have plenty of fresh water available to keep your dog hydrated, especially in the heat

Regular Breaks: Take frequent breaks to allow your dog to stretch, relieve themselves, and get some fresh air.

Never Leave Them in the Car: Even with the windows open, cars can quickly become dangerously hot

Comfortable Restraint: Ensure your dog is safely restrained with a pet seatbelt, carrier, crate or behind a dog guard.

Pack the Essentials: Bring your dog’s favourite toys, blankets, enough extra water to cool your pet in case of traffic delays or a breakdown and any necessary medications (ensure they are labelled or they could be confiscated)

Stay Cool: Use sunshades for car windows and keep the air conditioning on to prevent overheating

Check for Pet-Friendly Stops: Plan your route with pet-friendly rest areas and accommodations, including veterinary surgeries along the way in case your pet becomes poorly.

Safe travels and happy adventures with your canine companion! 🐹🐱🐭🚗

Grass seeds might look small and harmless, but in the wrong place, they can cause a great deal of trouble. If your dog has been running in long grass, always check them for grass seeds afterwards, and remove any that you find, especially in between the toes, round their armpits and near their eyes. If you find one stuck, or a wound/swelling that looks like it could contain one, book an appointment with your vet. It’s important to remove grass seeds quickly, because their pointy shape enables them to pierce through skin, enter the body and travel around causing problems such as infections and abscesses.

🔸SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR🔸
Grass seeds often cause problems in the ears, between toes, behind eyelids, up their nose and sometimes, under the skin and around the body.

EARS: If your dog has a grass seed in their ear, you may notice them excessively scratching it, or shaking their head.

EYES: If your dog has a grass seed stuck behind their eyelid, they are likely to develop a painful, weepy or sore eye.

PAWS: If your dog has a grass seed between their toes, they might excessively lick or nibble their paw, and overtime you might notice saliva staining and a swelling.

NOSE: If a grass seed has gone up your dog’s nose, you might notice sudden or violent sneezing as well as gagging or coughing.

ELSEWHERE: A grass seed travelling around the body is likely to cause vague symptoms such as a non-healing wound, low energy and an intermittent high temperature.

!!Important!!

With summer around the corner and the weather getting nicer, wagging pups would like to send a reminder to everyone that our personal temperature cut off point is 24 degrees - this means we will either;

🐶shorten walks
🐶reschedule/ earlier walks
🐶swap their walks for drop in visits to let them go to the toilet
🐶cancel walks

There are many factors into our decision other than temperature, for example; colour, coat length or double coated, age and fitness.

We aim to walk somewhere with plenty of shade and always have water on us. We also do our best to give plenty of notice but despite religiously monitoring the weather app it does make last minute changes. Ultimately for us at wagging pups we would rather miss out on a walk with our wonderful friends than take the risk.

Chloe, Morgan & Jack 💜

Merry Christmas to all the wagging pups family, have a lovely time and we will see you soon.
