Clinical Canine Massage with Jane

Clinical Canine Massage with Jane Clinical Canine massage is used to rehabilitate soft tissue and muscular injuries commonly seen as limping, lameness, slowing down or stiffness.

It also provides chronic pain management of orthoptic conditions such as arthritis and hip dysplasia. Hi, I'm Jane, of Clinical Canine Massage with Jane, based in Surrey. As a dedicated dog lover with two years of specialised training in Clinical Canine Massage, my mission is to help your beloved canine companion move more comfortably, experience less pain and enjoy a happier quality of life. My o

wn journey began with my German Shepherd, who has recently been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Canine massage is aiding her to keep mobile and still getting up to her usual mischief! I offer a fully mobile service, bringing massage sessions to the comfort of your own home. Creating a safe, relaxed environment for both you and your dog is paramount to me, as this ensures I can deliver the most effective massage whilst providing a positive experience for your pet. Clinical canine massage is used to rehabilitate soft tissue and muscular injuries which often present as limping, lameness, slowing down or stiffness. It also provides excellent chronic pain management for orthopaedic conditions such as arthritis and hip dysplasia. Your dog may not be able to tell you when they're in pain, but they will certainly show you. You may notice the following:
- Limping or unable to fully weight bear on one or more legs
- Having difficulty jumping on / off the sofa or into the car
- Character changes, grumpy or withdrawn
- Appearing to age overnight
- Problems getting up / lying down
- No longer keen to go for a walk
- Performance issues, eg: dropping poles, missing entries
These signs often indicate they might need some help. If you'd like more information about how Clinical Canine Massage could benefit your four-legged friend, please do get in touch.

We are counting down the days to the Chertsey Show next weekend.

Both Hayley and I, clinical canine massage therapist are offering FREE canine muscular health checks to any dog attending the show.

About your dogs FREE Muscular Health Check

We use the art of Advanced Palpation which is an examination of your dogs muscles underneath the surface using our hands and fingers

How? We use a developed sense of touch to search for deviations of the muscles natural tone, temperature, texture or tenderness; commonly called the 4T’s.

As standard we will check over around 40 different pairs or 80 muscles. This may sound a lot but believe it or not we class this as only a superficial check! In practice, we work on many more muscles as when your dog is stood certain types of contraction will prevent us from being able to examine certain muscles under an isometric contraction.

We are looking for things such as:

Strains - a tear to the muscle caused by overstretching. Strains can be debilitating depending on how much of the muscle is affected. A strain can be REPETITIVE (caused by something your dog does time and time again) or ACUTE ( a result of a direct injury/sudden trauma)

Trigger Point - Hyperirritable bands within the muscle, commonly called ‘knots’. These cause early onset muscular fatigue (i.e.; your dog is getting tired early on their walks/performance), reduced range of motion, can be painful to the touch, cause referred pain and ischemia (oxygen and nutrient depravation to the tissue) Look to see if you can spot what we call a ‘local twitch response’ which denotes the presence of trigger points.

Wide Radiating Myofascial Pain - where a large area of fascia or connective tissue is affected causing chronic or ongoing day to day pain. Fascia is the riverbed of the body allowing for nerve pathways and it also wraps every muscle and organ individually and should allow for slide and glide. When it becomes tight we can liken it to a human wearing a pair of trousers two sizes too small.

With any of these issues you won’t believe the difference a clinical massage makes!
Results in just 1 - 3 sessions that you can see and your dog can feel.

If you are unable to attend the show but are interested in a FREE muscular health check for your dog Or if you would like more information how clinical canine massage can help your dog please get in touch

The countdown to the CHERTSEY SHOW 2025 on 9th & 10th August has started…

I am teaming up with Hayley to offer
FREE Muscular Health Checks for your four legged friend

Why should my dog get a muscular health check?

Think of it as a “body MOT” for your furry friend! A muscular assessment can sniff out sneaky trouble spots—like muscle strains, trigger points, and overworked areas that are picking up the slack for others. These hidden issues might be the reason behind your pup’s wobbly walk or that mysterious reluctance to zoom around like they used to.
You’ll walk away with a better understanding of what’s going on under the fur—and some handy tips to help your dog feel their best!

Paws for the legal bit:

Because we respect the Veterinary Act 1966 and the Exemptions Order 2015, we can’t offer massages at shows. But don't worry, we’ve still got plenty of tail-wagging insights to share!

Come and find us at our stand located around the dog area… We look forward to meeting you.

We will also be at the Chiswick Dog Show on 21st September and Dogfest at Loseley Park, Guildford on 27th & 28th September.

A busy weekend - Edition Dogs Live!

After two days at the Agility Club Championship Agility Show,
Yesterday - was my chance to work on the Canine Massage Guild stand at Edition Dogs Live. Working alongside seven other therapists we offered free muscular health checks to the four legged visitors and advice to their owners. There were many different breeds and sizes of dogs. Somehow I ended up on the demo team in one of the rings where Sam presented the Clinical canine massage demonstration explaining to owners the basics of how to massage their four legged friends. It was a great experience and I thank the other therapists for their kindness and support.

This week I have been privileged to work with retired 'PD' Rebel

Rebel's story - As part of the Police Puppy Programme Rebel was assigned to his handler at 8 weeks old in June 2018. Search dog training started at a year old and he passed out as a 'PD' police dog in 2019. Rebel is trained to find fi****ms, drugs and cash. He worked all over London, supporting front line offices, working with Ports police and ceremonial duties including the Kings Coronation. Rebel has total faith in his handler, working a variety of scenarios, palaces, crime scenes, boats and airports. Unfortunately the last few months of service Rebel developed a limp and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his front legs, and was lucky enough to retire with his handler in 2024. Rebels condition is now managed with restricted walks, a good diet and lots of love from all of his family.

After the massage Rebel's owner gave this review..
This week, Rebel had a …… massage, he is a working springer spaniel, to which sitting still does not come natural. Jane worked some kind of magic, calming him down to zone out for nearly and hour. Jane worked his whole body and focused on his front legs. For the rest of the day, Rebel seemed chilled, tired and relaxed. The next day, Rebel was full of zest, I think the massage eased his mobility as he appeared more relaxed. Not sure if it was the massage or colder weather, but Rebel was full of beans on the walk, a gentle warm down on the lead back to the car. I believe Janes magic has had a beneficial effect on Rebel, he does appear a little more relaxed as he sprawls across the floor next to me.
I will be booking Rebel in for a follow up visit in a few weeks.

Last week I enjoyed attending 2 days of continual professional development (CPD) with the amazing Natalie Lenton from the Canine Massage Guild.
Day 1 Skills review - reviewing all of my skills and learning a few more techniques to add to my tool box.

Day 2 Facilitated stretch - learning 24 stretches to either use while massaging or as a stand alone.

As a Guild member I spend at least 25 hours a year participating in continual professional development. This means I am continually updating my skills and knowledge, which I use with my clients.

If you would like to know more about the benefits of Clinical canine massage and how it can help your dog contact me.

Nelly's Hip Dysplasia Journey: A Multi-Therapy Approach

I'd like to introduce you to my German Shepherd, Nelly, who will be turning eight next month. I've had her since she was a puppy, and she's always been incredibly active with boundless energy - typical for her breed!

Despite her naturally athletic nature, Nelly has been diagnosed with Bilateral Hip Dysplasia. Recently, she's been cleared to receive massage therapy again after undergoing PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections in both hips.

After consulting with our vet, I chose this conservative treatment approach rather than proceeding with a total hip replacement surgery. As both Nelly's owner and a Clinical Canine Massage therapist, I'm taking a multi-faceted approach to managing her condition:

Hydrotherapy & Targeted Exercise: Regular sessions with Jamie Voo Vets Physiotherapist, focus on hydrotherapy and targeted exercises specifically designed to strengthen the muscles around the hips joints. Aiming to keep the hip joint stable and supported.

Clinical Canine Massage: I'm applying my professional skills to help my own dog by:

Addressing protective muscle splinting where her body compensates for pain
Reducing myofascial pain and trigger points
Breaking down adhesions that restrict movement
Maintaining muscle flexibility to better support her joints

Our goal is to keep Nelly as active and comfortable as possible, allowing her to enjoy the energetic lifestyle she loves, despite her condition.

It's a special experience being able to use my training to help my own dog while also seeing firsthand how these complementary therapies work together to improve comfort and mobility for dogs with joint conditions like hip dysplasia.

If your dog is experiencing mobility issues, I understand both professionally and personally how Clinical Canine Massage might help. Feel free to reach out: [email protected]
