For Dog Theft Awareness Day we're giving you some tips on how to make sure your pup stays safe. Get your dog microchipped, not only is it a legal requirement, but it makes identifying your pet quick and easy if they ever get lost. The same goes for a collar and ID tag, dogs must wear these when they're out in public. We recommend not having your dog’s name included on its collar as this is valuable information to a thief. For more tips, read our blog on the website www.trophypetfoods.co.uk/blog/how-to-keep-your-dog-safe

Today is Plant a Flower Day, and although we all like our gardens to look pretty- some flowers can be poisonous to dogs. Dogs Trust has put together a list of all the plants that could cause your dog to become ill if eaten:
- Azaleas and rhododendrons, if eaten, can cause nausea, vomiting and difficulty breathing.
- Daffodil and other narcissus bulbs are toxic to dogs and cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
- Delphinium, eating young larkspur plants and seeds can cause digestive problems including vomiting and diarrhoea, nervousness.
- Yew, eating yew berries and foliage (but particularly the foliage) can cause dizziness, a dry mouth, abdominal cramps, salivation and vomiting.

It's National Dog Biscuit Day and all the pups here are jumping for joy! But not all dogs get on with hard, crunchy biscuits- especially smaller breeds and older dogs. Our holistic small bite kibble is extremely light and aerated so it fractures easily in the mouth. This helps those with tiny teeth, or less teeth, while still making it appetising for them.

For Cat Health Month we’ve been giving advice and guidance on keeping your feline in tip-top condition. Today we’re looking at cat flu. The symptoms can appear out of nowhere and may affect their overall well-being. Although it can go away on its own, we always recommend getting your cat checked by your vet if you spot any of the following symptoms: sneezing, watery eyes, difficulty breathing, runny nose, loss of appetite, coughing and dribbling.

If you’re swapping your dogs food over to Trophy, or moving on from puppy food, our local nutritional advisers can help you with the blending in process. This is where you slowly introduce the new food along with the old.

If a dog has gone off its food, it could be due to its teeth. When they are sat quietly, gently lift the flaps of their gums and have a quiet look at the teeth you can see. Pay attention to the colour of the gums- they should be a nice pink colour. If you spot any lumps or broken and chipped teeth contact your vet for an appointment. If you have a puppy, we recommend getting them used to teeth brushing as this will help with their health as they get older.

Cats have an instinct to groom themselves and, as a result, they can swallow hair. Long-haired cat breeds (e.g. Maine C**n and Persian) are more prone to develop hairballs because of excessive grooming and hair shedding. Brushing your cat will decrease this and help create a bond between you. It is generally recommended to groom a long-haired cat on a daily basis, and twice a week for short-haired cats. After a grooming session, you can wipe down your cat with the help of moist pet wipes to pick up any remaining loose hair.

February is National Cat Health Month- so we have some tips on how to keep your feline friend feeling good. Playtime not only keeps your cats brain active and gives them indoor exercise, but it is also a great way to bond with them. Did you know cats actually enjoy playing fetch in the same way dogs do? Make sure you use a toy you can throw to the other side of the room and small enough that your cat can carry it in their mouth.

When it’s frosty, check any outside water bowls haven’t frozen over which will prevent your dog from drinking. It may also be best to switch to high-grade food-standard water bowls to prevent your dog’s tongue from making contact with frosted metal surfaces.
