We posted this morning about the growing dog obesity epidemic which is concerning vets across the UK. Here is a handy visual guide to help you regularly assess your dog's body condition score and adjust feed and exercise accordingly. Remember, successful weight loss is part feed reduction, part exercise increase, and doing both will work best if possible.

With the concept of future dog shows (when they get the go ahead from the KC) requiring mask usage, I have been counter conditioning the dogs to masks for a couple weeks now. It's so important to get your dogs used to masks to avoid fear reactions. Even the most well adjusted dog can get spooked if they don't expect a judge or other exhibitor to walk up behind them wearing a face mask, or if they meet someone out on a walk who is wearing one and it spooks them. This applies to pet and sport dogs too, we should all be responsibly conditioning our dogs to these to avoid potential accidents.

Here's a beginners How-To... You will need a mask and some high value treats!

Start with the mask in your hand, allow the dog to investigate it in their own time, reward them heavily just for even looking in its direction.
Once the dog is comfortable with the idea of it being in your hand, lift it up towards your head for just a second then lower it again. Reward.
Once you've done this several times and the dog is comfortable with it, hold it up against your face for a second or two, lower it and reward again. Do this several times and give plenty of rewards for it! This is a big step.
After that, move onto hooking the ear loops onto your ears for just a second or two, reward whilst it's on, then unloop it and take it away. Repeat.
After this step build up the duration of time you are wearing the mask from one or two seconds to a minute (slowly! Don't rush it) reward continuously the whole time the mask is on your face.

Don't - make high pitched or squeaky noises when introducing your dog to the mask, don't get over exciteable or wave your arms around, and don't make a big deal about it. Just calmly and quietly reward your dog whenever he looks at it or sees you wearing it. This way you're making a positive association with your mask by rewarding every time he sees it.

I hope this is helpful, there is a useful infographic further down our page on masks and dogs too.

It's become very important to desensitise your dog to people wearing masks as we begin to see them worn frequently in everyday life. Here are some top tips on the process of introducing your dog to masks. Remember, little and often will help your dog desensitise much quicker. Try to act natural when you're wearing it and make it fun by playing a game with them or doing some trick training whilst heavily rewarding them to help them understand that masks are a positive thing. Some dogs will adapt much easier than others, if your dog shows signs of being stressed, take it back a step and do very short sessions.

For the past six months Jess has been working on completing her Competitive Obedience Certificate course. Jess teaches our advanced/competition class aimed towards competing obedience dogs and training up those who are interested in the sport. Obedience is a great way to bond with your dog and show off your skills to other like minded dog lovers! If you're interested in taking up obedience with either a puppy or adult dog, PM us to enquire about classes with Jess. For obvious reasons we're still currently not able to hold classes but once we get the go ahead from the Scottish Government and the Kennel Club we will be back to business 😊

Kong have introduced a new treat that fits right into the hole in your Kong toy, for those days when you don't have time to fill or freeze a Kong. Remember that our dogs are going to be getting used to us staying home and that they may develop separation anxiety once COVID-19 is over and we all go back to work. Start to tackle that now by leaving your dog in the house alone for 15-20 minutes at a time, with a chew or filled Kong to ease them back into normality.
