As part of Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month, two of our RVNs, Kara and Charlotte, visited Compass School in Lingwood to speak with pupils about a career in veterinary nursing. They shared their experiences of working in practice, discussed the skills and qualifications involved, and gave pupils an insight into the rewarding role veterinary nurses play in animal care. It was a fantastic opportunity to inspire and educate the next generation about careers within the veterinary profession 🐾🩺

πŸ’š Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month πŸ’š

Marlon Head RVN

I have been in the veterinary industry since 2007 when carrying out work experience, then I became an employed member of staff in 2009 (17-19years)
I qualified in 2015 meaning I have been an RVN for 11 years!
I always wanted to work with animals, initially I was unsure in what capacity that would be but after carrying out work-experience at Anchorage I knew I wanted to join the team. I trained as a veterinary nurse through the apprenticeship route.
During my early years of being an RVN I was privileged to have the opportunity to assist with a variety of exotic species at a local wildlife park. The highlights for me were helping with the big cats, primates and reptiles.
Although my career has changed into a more managerial role, I still love how varied my work can be and thoroughly enjoy my share of clinical days with the team πŸ’š

πŸ’š Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month πŸ’š

Kara-Jayne RVN

I have been working within the veterinary industry for 18years (half my life!) and all of them here at Anchorage! Starting as an Auxiliary nurse (today’s PCA - patient care assistant) to training as a student, becoming an RVN and even Head RVN for a brief period of time. I am proud and blessed to have had this career progression and after all these years I still love what I do!
I became an RVN in 2014, meaning I am 12 years qualified.
I have always been a practical learner and found the apprenticeship route of training suited me much better as I could learn on the job.
I always knew I wanted to work with animals (like most of us in this profession) I just wasn't sure how that would look. I considered working with the RSPCA, along with other animal care roles however after carrying out work experience within a veterinary practice I knew veterinary nursing was my vocation. πŸ’š

πŸ’š Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month πŸ’š

Amie RVN

I have been working in veterinary for 18yrs, this year I am 10 years qualified as a registered veterinary nurse!
Growing up I wanted to be a vet, but when I started working at my first veterinary practice I realised that veterinary nursing was my calling. I studied veterinary nursing via the apprenticeship route; I found the course very practical as I could still work in a practice while only needing one day away a week at college. πŸ’š
