Can’t wait for more warmer days so we can start up proper swim sessions again. The dogs absolutely love it!

*note: don’t worry, the dogs are safe! This is a dead end d**e with a slow speed limit, non fast moving tides, incoming boats can be seen from a distance and dogs can be recalled in good time, shallow enough for us to jump in if an emergency occurs, we only do this with strong swimmers with owners permissions. Each dog is risk assessed to be safe. All dogs wear harnesses when swimming for easy pull out if needed. For group swims, always more than one person is on hand for safety. Our priority is the dog’s safety as well as their enjoyment.

Be your dogs Advocate & Safe Space 💚

Advocate (noun) “a person who intercedes on behalf of another”

Safe Space (noun) “a place or situation in which you are protected from harm or danger”

Both these are very true when it comes to your dogs in public or at home. As professional dog walkers, it’s our priority to make sure the dogs out with us get mentally and physically stimulated but also it’s important that we ensure this is done with the dogs emotional wellbeing in mind.

This is why we make sure that every dog is assessed before joining in on group walks as it’s on a dog by dog basis. Not every dog is happy in a large active dog group. Once they are comfortable joining in, our jobs as advocates does not stop there, we at CT&T teach every dog that we are their “safe space” on walks and we will protect them for emotional or physical harm. Every dog is taught that they can stand between our feet if they are feeling overwhelmed and need a moment and we are always there to step in when they need us to. Doing this builds that relationship between us and the dogs, letting them know they can trust we put their needs first.

Making sure being an advocate and safe space for our dogs is not only the parents jobs, but ours too.

How do you advocate for your dogs on walks?

Here is Hector using his safe space on the walk. What was the reason for him looking for support? It was very windy on the hill and the dogs were running around so he needed a moment of reassurance and ofcourse some treats! After a few mins, I put everyone back on lead and we headed for a more sheltered area of the field which he much preferred. Well done little dude 💙

My Story

I’m Emma, Owner of Countryside Tails and Trails. I have been working and been Assistant Manger to Norwich’s leading and award winning Pet care Company for the last 6years. I have completed the first year and a half of BSc Animal Science and Welfare at Easton College, became a Canine First Aid Instructor and am Level 3 Canine First Aid trained, and am currently undertaking various online training courses in Behaviour, Training, Welfare, Nutrition and Caring for various species while keeping up to date with the latest Animal Academic Journals, Studies, Sciences and Positive Training techniques.

I have lived all my life around animals of all shapes and sizes including African Grey Parrots, Siamese and Persian cats, a rescue Whitetail Deer Fawn, goats, various breeds of dogs including 7 German Shepherd Dogs (Yes 7, all at one time!) including my last amazing boy Leo. I have volunteered around dogs, cats, livestock and horses to name but a few.

I currently have a rescue cat called Gracie (who has a neurological disorder) and an adopted Pug called Lola (who is Epileptic). Both have taught me a lot about the care for pets with additional needs and have done so over the last 5 years including caring for pets with epilepsy, diabetes and dogs with special physical needs.

Key to my love of animals is safeguarding their welfare and instilling core training skills all while having a positive environment and making sure they have fun in the process.
