It was great to see Hebridean Princess back for a scheduled visit this morning. The tenders ferry the guests ashore and they head out for walks around the village. This afternoon they were heading for the Isle of Rum and then hopefully St Kilda later this week!

After a long winter, it's now the start of our 17th season at the Jetty!

Following the damage to our pontoon during Storm Amy, things will be a little bit different this year. We've reduced the size of the pontoon which means that we will now only have 1 visitor berth but we've added another visitor mooring buoy, which means we now have 5 available. Many thanks to Chris and the team at Atlantic Mariculture who headed up to Salen on Friday in their landing craft to lay a new mooring and replace the ground tackle for another.

Anyone wishing to use the pontoon berth overnight will need to contact us by phone to check if the berth is available and, if it is, it will then be reserved for you. Due to us now being short of space on the pontoon, this means that we will no longer be able to offer any short stays. Short stays may use the stone jetty but this is tidal so won't be available at some states of the tide and you will need to watch your lines.

We have 4 red mooring buoys marked Visitor and 1 blue buoy marked Jetty and these will be available on a first come, first served basis. There are tags on the pickups with our phone number to contact on arrival, to arrange payment.

Tenders for the visitor mooring buoys can be left on the pontoon, alongside the bridge. For anyone who has used our moorings previously this area has moved, as we now have a seasonal day boat in the old tender area. A plan is shown below showing the new layout.

We've tried to place appropriate signage on the pontoon but if you have any queries, please give us a ring on 07909 944494. Please note that our old landline number is no longer in use.

All our other services are still available, including Marine Diesel and Bottled Gas. Paul & Anita are still running the brilliant Salen Jetty Shop and this is open as usual Monday to Saturday 9.00am to 5.00pm and Sunday 10.00am to 2.00pm and, yes, they still do the amazing Sausage Rolls, Snacks, Baking, Coffees and Ice Cream as well as a very well stocked shop for provisions.

Hope to see you all soon.

What an amazing afternoon out on Mingary today! Flat calm, amazing Autumn colours and lighting coupled with an abundance of wildlife in the entrance to the loch. Let's hope it continues a little bit longer!

After 4 days of no power, mobile or broadband signal, we're now back in contact with the outside world! Luckily, we've got a generator so we had power in the house.

Storm Amy is probably the worst storm that we've encountered in the 15 years since we moved here. We've had similar strengths of wind before but they have always been Westerly whereas this was Southerly for a couple of hours, with 82mph gusts and was by far the worst weather we have had in the bay. The pontoon is still there but unfortunately snapped part of the main walkway - the safety chains did their job and stopped the whole thing from breaking up. As a result of this, the pontoon is not economically viable to be repaired so we've taken the house and business off the market and are going to remove the majority of the pontoon permanently. There will still be a 14.5m landing stage for visitors and the 4 visitor mooring buoys will be in operation.

As well as the damage to the pontoon, two yachts dragged their moorings in the bay but luckily both escaped unharmed.

We hope everyone else's boats were safe - it looks like most pontoons in the area have suffered some damage - one hell of a storm!

Here's a video showing one of the gusts (watch the whole video with the sound on as it looks quite tame at the beginning).

All the best for the winter - Mark & Jan

Its been another amazing week on our boat trips as well as being busier with the visiting yachts while we've had the settled weather. Most of the visiting yachts have seen the Dolphins as they've been heading up the loch and they've been performing their acrobatics for them as well as swimming along with them. Let's hope they stay a bit longer 🐬🐬

We've had dolphins in the loch for the last 3 to 4 weeks and it's
quite rare to see them for such a long and sustained period. Lots of the visiting yachts have seen them and everyone has been enthralled with the acrobatics.
Getting video footage has been quite difficult but today they decided to surf in our wake, with others performing acrobatics a little bit further away. These were just outside Salen Bay and this lunchtime we could see them from our house (albeit with binoculars).
Hope you enjoy the video and if you're heading up this way, do keep any eye out - we're hoping that they'll stay a bit longer yet 🐬🐬

Atlantic Mariculture from Ardtoe have arrived here for a few days in their new 12m Landing Craft, Eliza of Ardtoe. Many yachties will have wondered what the red buoys are, on the north shore of the Isle of Oronsay in Loch Sunart (opposite the Isle of Risga). This is one of Atlantic Maricultures seaweed farms which they have been cultivating for a few years now. Their new Landing Craft will help with harvesting but is also available to hire if you need anything transporting by water locally and it also has a crane so can help with mooring work https://www.atlanticmariculture.co.uk/

Yesterday they came round from Loch Moidart on the north of the peninsula and brought a vehicle on the boat with them so that they could get home. It was very interesting to see them head into both our slipway and the stone jetty, where they safely unloaded the vehicle and the boat will stay on our pontoon for the next few days.

There's some amazing wildlife around in Loch Sunart at the moment. Do keep an eye out when you're heading up the loch!
