One of the reasons I train using positive reinforcement as much as humanly possible is that the dog's experience is important to me. I want them to feel as relaxed and safe as possible.

If we take care to train thoughtfully and gently that should extend to other aspects of our dogs' lives too. Charlie isn't a huge fan of being touched by people he doesn't know well and noisy things like clippers can worry him so grooming is something he can find a little stressful. We could just push through in order to 'get it done' and ignore what he's telling us but doing so disregards his experience.

Instead his lovely groomer, Louise Thompson at Alba K9 takes the time to make him feel as relaxed and safe as she can. Minimal restraint, gentle touch, breaks when he needs them and lots and lots of positive associations. Louise puts Charlie's experience before her convenience and that is why I recommend Louise unreservedly to all my clients.

When we use coercion or force in one area of our dogs' lives the fallout of that inevitably leaches into other areas. Equally, when we build trust, safety and confidence in one area that benefits other parts of their life.

Today is National Walk Your Dog Day but instead of focusing on the benefits of walking your dog, I'd like to focus, perhaps controversially, on why I believe in rest days free from walks. Consider adding a rest day into your dog's week and enjoy a calmer dog.
