It goes without saying that today's Urban Tracking workshop was cancelled due to temperatures being so high that even we humans are struggling with physical activity on a day like today 🌡️
But here's a round up of some of our scenting activities from over the past week, when the temps weren't quite so unforgiving!
🐾 Last Sunday, scent detection dogs Myia, Betty, Jude, Inca, Dottie and Luna had a fantastic indoor session working on a variety of different searches. Myia and Jude transitioned from Kong to gun oil, while Betty and Inca worked on a series of high and inaccessible finds. Luna absolutely loved putting her workaholic lab brain to use, while nervous girl Dottie got to have some fun games of chase to help her feel more settled and engaged before tackling some simple Kong searches. Fantastic job, everyone!
🐾 On Tuesday, mantrailing teams Bella and Homer tackled a mix of single\double blinds incorporating junction work, to really get them thinking about the decisions they make on trail. Super, super job done by Homer, who is getting used to occasionally finding his instructor, and it was great to get to spend time working on Bella's arousal levels by focusing on some tracking and indication skills which really helped to calm her down during and after the trail.
🐾 And on Saturday, tracking teams Burt, Myia and Bear worked on some technical exercises to help them figure out contamination, before finishing with a track\trail in the Neighground, where they dealt with elevation changes. Lovely to see how much progress each team made within a single session 💜
Many of our nosework clients participate in multiple scent disciplines, which allows us to give individually focused and team-specific support regardless of the activity being practiced. I'm often asked "can my dog do tracking, trailing *and* scent detection?" And the answer is: Yes; dogs are very capable of participating in multiple scent activities, though you may find that your four-legged friend has a preference for one based on their own interests!
