Saturday's tracking dogs Burt and Myia had a super fun morning of nosework as we tackled junction work and rewarding correct decisions after making direction choices. The handlers also discussed some of the body language and tracking behaviours they might observe - and we did indeed observe them in action! 🤩

After working on some components we then headed into the Neighground to put some of our new knowledge to the test, and to introduce the dogs to working through a large odour pool at the end of the track. The tall grass makes for some fun opportunities for open finds.

Super job, guys! 😍

It goes without saying that today's Urban Tracking workshop was cancelled due to temperatures being so high that even we humans are struggling with physical activity on a day like today 🌡️

But here's a round up of some of our scenting activities from over the past week, when the temps weren't quite so unforgiving!

🐾 Last Sunday, scent detection dogs Myia, Betty, Jude, Inca, Dottie and Luna had a fantastic indoor session working on a variety of different searches. Myia and Jude transitioned from Kong to gun oil, while Betty and Inca worked on a series of high and inaccessible finds. Luna absolutely loved putting her workaholic lab brain to use, while nervous girl Dottie got to have some fun games of chase to help her feel more settled and engaged before tackling some simple Kong searches. Fantastic job, everyone!

🐾 On Tuesday, mantrailing teams Bella and Homer tackled a mix of single\double blinds incorporating junction work, to really get them thinking about the decisions they make on trail. Super, super job done by Homer, who is getting used to occasionally finding his instructor, and it was great to get to spend time working on Bella's arousal levels by focusing on some tracking and indication skills which really helped to calm her down during and after the trail.

🐾 And on Saturday, tracking teams Burt, Myia and Bear worked on some technical exercises to help them figure out contamination, before finishing with a track\trail in the Neighground, where they dealt with elevation changes. Lovely to see how much progress each team made within a single session 💜

Many of our nosework clients participate in multiple scent disciplines, which allows us to give individually focused and team-specific support regardless of the activity being practiced. I'm often asked "can my dog do tracking, trailing *and* scent detection?" And the answer is: Yes; dogs are very capable of participating in multiple scent activities, though you may find that your four-legged friend has a preference for one based on their own interests!

On Sunday we had an absolutely amazing day of nosework on our first ever Track to Trail workshop.

Eight experienced teams came along to learn some new skills and progress on their individual tracking\trailing journeys. Some of the activities and goals we covered were:

🐾 Lowering arousal levels for the dogs that find trailing extremely exciting
🐾 Creating slower, more methodical trailing in the dogs that tend to rush on and overshoot turns
🐾 Creating value for the track\trail, as well as maintaining value for the end point
🐾 Teaching the handlers the basic skills they need to be able to set up their own tracks

Every single dog was nailing the exercises perfectly by the end of the day. Tracking dogs Burt and Betty had their first taste of mantrailing, learning that there can be a person to find at the end of their track. Trailing dogs Bella, Duke, Boudie and Sassie did extremely well on their tracks, swiftly settling in to very methodical working. Meanwhile, baby Bear had his first ever tracking session and handled it like a pro, while Homer had a trail laid that consisted of terrain transitions, height transitions, and 🐑 💩 distractions.

The day wasn't just about teaching new concepts as a one off, but about discussing meaningful and long lasting changes that we can make for each team to improve how they tackle their trails. Now comes the real fun: putting all of this into practice during regular progression sessions 😁

Saturday's Scent detection job did an absolutely FANTASTIC job on a very challenging scent discrimination exercise I set for them, and it was great to see the dogs going from perplexed to fully understanding what we were asking of them by the end of the session. We discussed how prior reinforcement history, recency bias, and how we set the exercises up, can affect the dog's success, and how to make sure we helped the dogs without tipping over into frustration.

Well done Boudie, Blaze, Sassie, Betty, Kali and Millie 🤩

Last Saturday's Scent Detection dogs did some work on distraction odours, utilising several different scent sources. As expected, the dogs found the items that smelled like other dogs more distracting than the human odour items, but everyone managed to work on their hides once some initial sniffing was over.

Great work from teams Tully, Betty, Burt, Kali, Blaze, Millie and Myia as always 💜

This week's mantrailing dogs worked some very technical but fun exercises and did an amazing job on both days!

First up, Tuesday evening trailers Bella and Homer tackled 500m single blind trails, focusing on terrain transitions, while Willow work on her rural tracking skills (and had a 🦌 as a distraction).

Today we looked at casting starts, which is more of a challenge for the handlers as it is for the dogs sometimes! Regardless, dogs AND humans did very well in a busy urban environment, and added one more skill into their mantrailing toolbox! 💜

For some reason, last weekend's scheduled posts didn't get processed... So here are some very late pictures of last Saturday's Scent activities!

First, Burt completed his UK Sniffer Dogs Silver Series 3 Tracking - huge congratulations to Burt and his humans for all their hard work! 🥳

In the afternoon scent classes, we allowed the dogs to do some self-paced searching and took a look at how warmer temperatures affect the find and cause the scent to move differently than in cooler weather. A nice chilled day in the paddock for Tully, Blaze and Betty, followed in the second class by Kali, Myia and Millie. 💜

Tuesday evening trailers got an impromptu venue change when our designated trailing spot was closed for emergency repairs... And all of my carefully laid class plans went out the window 🤣

Luckily we had another suitable location very close by, so teams Homer, Dougal, Bella, Jude, and Cooper did some technical work on backtracks, while Blue came along to try his paw at mantrailing.

Excellent work from the experienced teams, who all put full effort into their exercises and succeeded despite the (very cold!!) windy conditions.

Blue also enjoyed himself... He can be a little nervous of strangers, but as it's met him for scent detection training at the weekend, I hid for him myself and he enjoyed hunting me down 🥰

Super work, everyone!
