The WVSC is a not-for-profit organisation which, in addition to providing PMEs, also supports the veterinary and agricultural sectors with diagnostic laboratory testing, advice, and training. Iechyd Da, a consortium of independent veterinary practices based in Wales together with Welsh Lamb and Beef Producers Ltd., working in collaboration with Aberystwyth University, have been appointed by the An

imal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) as a third party provider to deliver expert post-mortem examinations (PMEs) of new and re-emerging diseases of farm animals. This new service is designed to provide support to veterinary businesses in Mid and North Wales, but will also contribute to an enhanced UK-wide scanning surveillance network which includes APHA, the wider veterinary profession and the livestock industry. Working out of the former Veterinary Investigation Centre in Aberystwyth, the Wales Veterinary Science Centre will initially provide expert PMEs for farm livestock. However, over time we intend to broaden the range of PMEs offered to include companion animals and wildlife species, as well as to develop a range of laboratory diagnostic services to support disease eradication programmes and to support field practitioners in disease diagnosis for their clients. The first stage will be to provide a PME service for veterinary surgeons within the Mid Wales region, and then, following consultation with the relevant veterinary practices, to extend this to North Wales using a carcass transport service.

πŸ‘πŸ”¬ WVSC is proud to support the Moredun Sheep Scab Biobank.

With evidence of resistance to injectable macrocyclic lactones (MLs) increasing in the UK, this important project is helping researchers understand the true extent of sheep scab treatment resistance and shape future control strategies.

By contributing diagnostic skin scrape samples, veterinary practices can support research that may lead to improved best practice guidelines, new diagnostic tools, and future treatment options for this significant sheep health and welfare challenge.

πŸ‘ Ram Fertility CPD at WVSC

A big thank you to everyone who joined us last week for our Ram Fertility CPD day.

The morning featured informative lectures at WVSC from Guto Wynne (Torch Farm & Equine Vets, Devon) and Kate Hovers, (Sheep Consultant and WVSC Director), covering key aspects of ram fertility and breeding soundness examinations. In the afternoon, delegates headed out on-farm for practical sessions, putting theory into practice and developing hands-on skills.

A special thank you to Ceva Ruminants UK for their presentation and for kindly sponsoring lunch.

Overall, it was a fantastic day of learning, discussion, and practical experience. If you would like to register your interest for any future CPD courses, please email us at πŸ“§ [email protected].

πŸ‘ **WVSC at the NSA Sheep Event 2026** πŸ‘

Our team had a great time at the NSA Sheep Event yesterday, meeting farmers, vets, and industry stakeholders and showcasing the diagnostic services we provide to support sheep health and productivity.

There was strong interest in our Sheep Scab ELISA blood test, which helps identify exposure to sheep scab and supports informed flock health decisions. As the ONLY laboratory in the UK to offer this test commercially, WVSC is proud to be leading the way in sheep scab diagnostics.

Thank you to everyone who visited our stand and took the time to chat with us. Together, we can improve sheep welfare and help tackle sheep scab across the industry.
