🧨 BANG!
As we head into Autumn, it’s time to think ahead to Fireworks season and how to protect our furry friends. If you know your pets don’t like the loud noises and bright lights, please plan ahead and get in touch if you need any help.
Pets show they are stressed or anxious in lots of ways, including panting excessively, drooling, shaking, hiding away, yawning, pacing and putting their tail between their legs.
Here are some top tips for ensuring your pet stays as stress free as possible: 🐶🐱🐰
🎇 Avoid walking your dog at night once it’s dark during the firework period. Ensure they have had their walk before it becomes dark if you can, keep them on the lead and consider a harness to avoid them running away if they get spooked (make sure your microchip details are up to date just in case!)
🎆 Keep your cat indoors. Remember to provide them with a litter tray near their usual exit spots.
🎇 If you can, move your outdoor rabbit indoors. If there is no space inside your house, a garage or a shed may block some of the noise and make your rabbit feel more secure.
🎆 Create a "safe space" indoors in the form of a den. This can be a crate, box or even under the table/bed. Cover the top and 3 sides with a towel so they feel secure and comfortable. Put your pet's favourite toys and some familiar blankets in here. You can also try Pet Remedy, Adaptil (for dogs) or Feliway (for cats).
🎇 Keep the television or radio on to provide some background noise. This is especially important if your pet is going to be home alone (try and be home if you know they get upset). Classic FM usually puts on a special radio show.
🎆 Close the windows and curtains to reduce the noise and sight of the fireworks.
🎇 Try a lickimat, snufflebox or other mental games to help distract your pet.
🎆 Stay calm yourself! Your pet will react to your fear! Give them a wee cuddle if they’re looking for support, but bear in mind some pets might want to be alone
The Blue Cross has some great advice on their website: www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/fireworks-and-pets
A lot of pets can benefit from short term anti-anxiety medication overnight to help them stay calm during the displays. Please call us if you think your pet would appreciate a ‘chill pill’ for the fireworks. There are lots of different options available, and what works for one pet doesn’t always work for another. Our vets can discuss things with you.
PLEASE NOTE: Depending on a number of factors, your pet may not be prescribed anti-anxiety medication without being seen by a Vet first so please call to check. We are very busy at the moment so don’t wait till the last minute to call us as we may not be able to fit you in
