Impulse control, another controversial topic.

In our puppy foundation course, we teach some foundation level impulse control exercises. However where we differ from some is in our understanding of and teaching of impulse control.

For me, impulse control comes from within the dog. It is your dog making an active decision not to act instinctively, such as your dog learning not to grab the piece of food that has dropped on the kitchen floor. It is NOT about telling your dog to LEAVE IT. If you rely on LEAVE IT, you are now managing your dog. This may be fine when things happen close by and you are able to manage your dog. But what happens when they are off lead, 20 metres away, and they have to make a choice?

I don’t think raising dogs to be micromanaged with LEAVE IT is helpful in the long run.

Fitness is important.

If we want to enjoy activities such as long hikes, gundog training, agility etc. we need our dogs to be fit and healthy and to help prevent injuries.

In addition to regular exercise, it can be helpful to add in conditioning exercises such as stepping over poles, left and right turns around a cone, positions (ensuring good posture in sits and stands).

It can also be beneficial for dogs to have regular check-ups with a canine physiotherapist. This way you can pick up on any problems early, and hopefully avoid injury. Physio’s are also helpful when recovering from injury, not just in rehabilitation but in aiding to reduce the injury occurring again.

Have you ever wondered how your dog’s nose is so precise?

The dog’s nose acts a bit like a sat nav system. Scent information is processed through each nostril, allowing them to determine the exact location the scent is coming from.

In our puppy foundations course, we cover lots about puppy confidence. We expose our puppy’s to ‘weird’ things and help them feel positive about these ‘weird’ things. This is a crucial part of your puppy’s development- learning to be ok with ‘weird’ things.

Our dogs are not very good at generalising. Taking the example of a chair (and one we work through in class) many puppy’s quickly become happy with the presence of chair, when presented in its normal position (upright). But when we place that chair upside down or on its side, it no longer appears ‘normal’ to your puppy.

While we recognise it as still a chair, for many puppies, this small change in the presentation of the chair, appears like the boogie man.

When socialising and habituating your puppy’s, once your puppy is comfortable with an object in its ‘normal’ exposures, try playing around with it by making it abnormal- appear differently than it usually would.

This helps create lifelong resilience to change and new things in your puppy.
