It was a busy weekend a few weekends ago.

We were out in Kintore doing a reline for a great couple wanting to revive their nature pond. Just in time for frog season!

Back out in April to look at plants for the pond that are low maintenance and great for wildlife. Excited to see this one flourish!

I promise I helped more than solely taking pictures!!

We spent last weekend out at the beautiful Scardroy Homes - Self Catering Accommodation in Alford. They were having issues with duckweed, due to some resident Ducks and the equipment in their pond needed a little TLC. They asked us to come out to help get their pond back in order; the filter is now set back up, new fountain in place, stream created and duckweed scooped out with treatment in to help keep it at bay - with the right maintenance in place the Ducks should be fine to come back and visit, which is great.

Absolutely beautiful place to spend the weekend - even if we were in waders and lifting heavy boulders to create a stream! And June was the perfect host. ❤️

Goodbye Gavin!

We started Finwise due to a call from a company with an 8 feet marine aquarium - the filter was making a noise and they needed someone to check it. Tony went to lend a hand and after a few visits was asked to maintain the tank regularly - and so Finwise was born.

The tank needed a fair bit of TLC and had a sole survivor called Gavin. Early morning weekly visits started to allow the company to continue to use the meeting room that was home to the aquarium. With clean up, water changes and water quality tests the water quality started to improve and we could add in some new livestock. A powder blue, a yellow tang, some shrimp and snails to help with the clean up, and a shoal of cromis to name a few. Gavin came out more often and made some new friends!

The aquarium was built in to the meeting room and when the company decided to move they asked us to decommission the aquarium and rehome the livestock. It took us two days to empty, drain, and scrub the tank and all of the equipment but all livestock were safely rehomed and the tank left ready for the next resident to take on. It was sad to see such a large aquarium with so much potential go but things change and people move on.

We would like to say a massive thank you to Star Shipping for giving us the opportunity to look after their aquarium and be part of the Finwise story! We wish you all the very best in your new office!

🌱The most common reason people think algae blooms is too much light, which is correct - algae loves light! However it could also be:

- excess in nutrients caused by overfeeding or debris in the pond,
- insufficient water changes,
- having imbalanced filtration, or;
- not enough healthy plants to absorb the excess nutrients

💡Good news - it can be conquered! The following will help keep those algae blooms at bay!

- Reduce Feeding - overfeeding is one of the most common causes of nutrient spikes.

- Boost Natural Plant Growth - add fast-growing aquatic plants to outcompete algae for nutrients.

- Control Light Exposure - use timers on artificial lighting (ideally 8–10 hours a day) and consider providing shade in outdoor ponds.

- Increase Water Changes - regular partial water changes (e.g. 10–20% weekly) help dilute nutrient levels.

- Improve Filtration - ensure filters are properly sized and cleaned. Consider UV clarifiers for ponds—these are excellent for green water.

- Use Beneficial Bacteria - pond or aquarium treatments containing live bacteria can help digest excess nutrients naturally.

- Manually Remove Algae - skim filamentous algae, vacuum out detritus, and clean surfaces—just be gentle to avoid stirring things up too much.
