🐶🐱 Can dogs and cats really live happily together?

Absolutely.

But it doesn't always happen automatically.

We often expect our dogs to understand that the cat is part of the family — and not something to chase, play with or constantly investigate.

Living together successfully means learning a few important things:

🐾 Respect each other's space
🐾 Learn to read each other's signals
🐾 Give everyone a safe place to retreat to
🐾 Prevent unwanted behaviour before it becomes a habit
🐾 And never assume that "they'll work it out themselves"

The goal isn't necessarily for your dog and cat to become best friends.

Sometimes peaceful roommates are absolutely perfect.

But when they choose each other's company...

Well, that's a pretty special bonus.

Because a calm dog, a confident cat and a peaceful home is a win for everyone.

🐾 Our dogs live in a world that wasn't made for dogs.

Every single day, we ask them to ignore their natural instincts.

"Don't react to that dog staring at you."
"Stand still at the vet when you're scared or uncomfortable."
"Don't bark when someone walks past the house."
"Don't chase the rabbit."
"Stay home alone, even though you're a social animal."
"Stay calm when the world around you is full of distractions."
"Leave that delicious food lying right in front of you."

And yet...

We are often surprised when they struggle.

Think about how much self-control we ask from our dogs every single day.

And think about how often they actually get it right. ❤️

Their behaviour isn't the problem.

Sometimes, the expectation is.

Our dogs aren't robots. They're animals with instincts, emotions, needs and limits.

So instead of only noticing when they get it wrong...

Let's notice how often they get it right.

And let's make it easier for them to succeed. 🐶💛

🃏 Trick Tuesday!

This week's card: MIDDLE

Your dog comes between your legs and settles there.

It looks cute... but this little trick can be surprisingly useful in real life!

🐾 A safe position when you're standing in a busy environment
🐾 A way to help your dog focus on you
🐾 Useful when navigating crowds or unfamiliar places
🐾 A great confidence-building exercise
🐾 And a lovely way to strengthen trust and teamwork

And sometimes, Middle simply gives your dog a safe little space right next to you.

They're about giving dogs skills they can use in the real world.

☀️🐾 Training, but make it early!

With the temperatures still soaring, we're keeping things to a minimum this week — just two early-morning classes to keep our dogs safe and comfortable.

This morning was the first one, and with 10 students joining us, I decided to turn it into a Good Citizen session.

We worked on focus, manners, obedience and all those everyday skills that help our dogs become happy and well-behaved members of society.

And judging by the happy faces (and wagging tails!), I'd say everyone passed with flying colours!

And because every good student deserves a reward...

Every single dog went home with a tasty duck leg!

A very good morning indeed! 🐾

The journey, not just the destination

🐾 Training is not about the end goal, but all the moments in between.

We often focus on the end result.
The perfect recall.
The loose lead.
The calm behaviour around other dogs.
The puppy who finally settles.

But training isn't just about getting there.
It's the tiny improvement nobody else notices.
The moment your dog makes a better choice.
The time they look back at you instead of rushing ahead.
The first time something that used to be difficult suddenly feels easy.

Those little moments are the training.
So don't rush to the finish line.
Notice the progress.
Celebrate the small wins.
Enjoy the journey.

Because that's where the relationship is built. 💛🐾

🐾 One thing I wish every new dog owner knew…

You don't have to teach everything at once.
Your puppy doesn't need to know 20 cues.
They don't need perfect walks.
They don't need to greet every dog they meet.

They need to learn that you're a safe person.
That the world is a good place to explore.
That they can come to you when things get difficult.
And that learning can be fun.

The rest will come.

Slow down. Enjoy your puppy. They're only little once.

Because the best time to build good habits isn't after problems appear...
It's before.

🃏 Trick Thursday!

This week's card: Touch! 🐾

At first glance, it looks like a simple trick...
"Touch my hand with your nose."
But don't underestimate the power of this little exercise.

A reliable Touch can help you:
🐾 Redirect your dog's attention.
🐾 Guide them into position without pulling on the lead.
🐾 Build confidence around new or scary objects.
🐾 Make training more fun and interactive. 🐾 Strengthen your communication and teamwork.

It's easy to teach, fun to practise, and one of those skills you'll find yourself using over and over again in everyday life.

At Barkbuster, we don't teach tricks just because they look cute. We teach them because they become real-life skills that make life easier for both dogs and their humans.

🐾 A tracker is a safety net… not a training tool.

CJ wears a Tractive GPS tracker, and honestly... I wouldn't want to be without it.
It gives me peace of mind, especially when we're out exploring, hiking or spending time on our land amd river.

But here's something important:
A GPS tracker is not a replacement for training. It doesn't teach a reliable recall. It doesn't make an unsafe situation safe. And it certainly doesn't mean every dog is ready to be off lead.

A tracker is exactly what it should be:
💛 A backup.

The real goal is still the same:
🐾 A dog that chooses to come back when called
🐾 A strong relationship built on trust
🐾 Good management and sensible decisions

Technology is a wonderful tool.
But nothing replaces good training.

For me, a tracker simply adds an extra layer of safety—and that's something I'm very grateful for.

🃏 Thursday Trick

This week's card: Paws Up! 🐾

At first glance, it looks like a fun trick...
But don't let its simplicity fool you.

Paws Up teaches so much more than placing two paws on an object.

It helps dogs develop:
🐾 Body awareness
💪 Strength and balance
🧠 Confidence
🎯 Focus
🤝 Teamwork with their owner

It also encourages dogs to think for themselves. "Where are my feet? How do I move my body? How do I solve this puzzle?"
And that's exactly why I love this exercise.

We teach them because they help dogs navigate the real world with more confidence.

💛 Every trick has a purpose. Because at Barkbuster, tricks aren't just tricks... they're life skills. 💛
