I DID NOT KNOW...

I did not know a horse could bring people into your life that end up meaning the most to you.
I did not know a horse could make the hardest days of your life bearable.
I did not know a horse could teach you to put others first.
I did not know a horse could remind you time and time again that your gut is always right.
I did not know a horse could break your heart.
I did not know a horse could pick you up when you have fallen apart.
I did not know a horse could teach you to dream again, after you thought it was not possible.
I did not know a horse could make you believe in yourself.
I did not know a horse could teach responsibility, work ethic, and dedication.
I did not know a horse could make you believe in something when no one else does.
I did not know a horse could make you learn to forgive and forget.
I did not know a horse could humble you faster than you can say humble.
I did not know a horse could make you a winner.
I did not know a horse could also teach you how to lose gracefully.
I did not know a horse could instill patience in you.
I did not know a horse could make you listen better.
I did not know a horse could give you their heart.
I did not know a horse could change your life.
I did not know a horse could do all these things...
but now I know.

🥺 I see so many riders sitting in dressage saddles like position A.

They haven’t yet got the physical ability to ride them as they’re designed. It feels comfortable, and the rider feels secure and balanced - but it’s an illusion.

In this position, the seat bones face towards the horse’s tail. With the pelvis tipped into anterior tilt, you simply can’t move it as you need to with the horse’s movement.

Position B isn’t perfect yet (before anyone comes for me 😂) - the leg still needs more hip extension, hamstring strength, and thigh flexibility to sit deeper into the saddle … but the foundation is there. The seat bones are weight-bearing, the pelvis can begin to move, and the correct muscles are working.

This is why I find it frustrating that dressage saddle are promoted for lower level riders but then the position needed in this type of saddle with thigh blocks is not explained. As riders progress, the pelvic movement they need just isn’t possible, so they end up extending the lower leg, gripping with the knees for stability, and fighting with a swinging lower leg. Their weight tips forward, balance is lost - and all of this is much harder on the horse.

That’s why learning to feel your seat bones carry weight in a neutral spine is the real first step. From there, riders can start to build the strength and flexibility to ride with their pelvis, not against it.

In the short term, I often recommend clients either stick to their GP saddle for flatwork or take off the thigh blocks in their dressage saddle where possible. It makes it easier to build correct mechanics before adding the support of a dressage saddle back in.
