It’s a dog’s life!
Bonnie, our black lab, loves being at Fontalbe and baking in the sunshine. But her real love is the water around it! The pool, much to her disappointment, is off limits but there’s never a day goes by when she’s not found playing in the water, the river on one side, the mill stream on the other. But better still is that muddy puddle on a country walk she finds to jump in! Doggie heaven!

Give your dog a treat. Book them in for a break. Let them explore the grounds at Fontalbe.

The Lascaux Cave is truly one-of-a-kind in France. While there are many other caves in the country, none can rival its stunning displays of prehistoric art. Montignac-Lascaux is also unique for its sheer number of reproductions—it holds as much art as two Chauvet caves and four Cosquer caves combined!

The original Lascaux cave has been closed to the public since 1963 to protect its exceptionally rare artwork. However, the International Center for Cave Art, Lascaux IV, offers a faithful reproduction. The awe-inspiring Hall of the Bulls is a highlight—keep your eyes peeled for prehistoric symbols, paintings, and engravings. You'll encounter a remarkable 357 horses and even one human figure, an exceptionally rare depiction in prehistoric art.

It’s the start of truffle season in the Dordogne. Meet Rigo, the truffle hound and his owner Xavier who we spent a morning with, gaining an insight into the fascinating science and skills required to hunt these delicious ‘black diamonds’. The grand finale was the tasting!

Celebrating a year of owning this wonderful and exiting place. I can’t believe its twelve months since we became the proud owners of Fontalbe, and what a year it has been. We’ve had fun, building a pétanque court, landing a 2 m high cast iron eagle, creating a ‘chimney’ walkway from the bridge crossing the mill pond to connect with the walking Boucles around the area (well still a few finishing touches needed there!). We’ve enjoyed the sunshine and sunsets, explored the grounds and the local area and Bonnie had made herself at home . We’ve had challenges – replacing the fosse was planned but reseeding the mud bath that was once a lawn was not in our plan ! Who said we wouldn’t get it done for the start of the season? And what a season it was. Great reviews and feedback from a lot of happy guests , the highlight of our first year.

A lovely Friday afternoon spent meeting Milly at Ferme L’Apogee. We picked the freshest, organic veggies and tasted some natural wine.
Next year we will be offering veg boxes for our guests and, if you want, you can go and pick your own.
We believe in supporting local businesses and Milly and Vincent are working incredibly hard and doing something fantastic.
Badger also made a new friend in Ziggy. We are looking forward to sharing this discovery with our guests, and also tasting more of their fantastic produce.

The latest additions to the Fontalbe menagerie! Fingers crossed that they are girls, as after an unusual conversation with a Frecnh chicken farmer we aren’t entirely sure.
Hopefully, they will mean lots of the freshest possible eggs for us and our guests.

We are very excited to let you know that we have partnered up with the brilliant Dordogne Vineyard Tours to bring to our guests the very best in guided vineyard tours. You will be picked up from Fontalbe, taken to vineyards around Bergerac, meet the winemakers, have a super picnic lunch and be able to quaff (sorry, taste) as much wine as you like. Then dropped back here at Fontalbe at the end of the day.
You don’t have to squabble over who is going to drive, can get wines shipped home and learn something new too.
What’s not to love?
We recommend booking your experience early so just get in touch and we will do the rest.
