🇬🇧It is recommended to use blunt tweezers or disposable gloves to handle the tick, but if you must use your fingers, shield them with a tissue or paper towel.
Infectious agents can be contracted through mucous membranes or breaks in the skin so caution is advised.
Grasp it as close to the skin surface as possible to limit risk of head detaching from the body upon removal.
Pull the tick out straight with a steady, even pressure.
Don't twist or jerk the tick as this can cause the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin, increasing the risks of infection.
If the tick doesn't release immediately, keep applying steady pressure for 1-2min with slow pulling.
Step 2: Disinfecting the Bite Area: After removing the tick, thoroughly disinfect the bite area, wash your hands with soap and water. Avoid home remedies like petroleum jelly or a hot match: they can cause the tick to salivate and actually increase the risks of getting a disease.
Step 3: Preserving the Tick: If you wish to preserve the tick for future reference, place it in rubbing alcohol and label the container with information about the time and place where the tick bite occurred. This can be helpful if rash or other symptoms associated with Lyme disease appear later, and can assist a vet or physician in diagnosing an illness.
Risks with ticks:Ticks can carry a range of diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Using preventatives and avoiding areas with high tick populations can help reduce the risks.
If you or your pet experiences any symptoms after a tick bite, seek medical attention immediately. Remember to always ask your veterinarian for advice on tick prevention and removal.
