Perfect explanation as to why it’s not always great to leave a dogs coat longer in the winter. Shared from a wonderful groomer I know in the UK……
“ I’d like to leave the coat longer so they don’t get cold” 🥶
Groomers hear this a lot at this time of year ✂️
Let me explain why this is NOT a good idea 👎
This particularly applies to dogs with a wool coat like a poodle or a combination coat, so any poodle, doodle type of mixed breed 🐩
These breeds should be on a regular grooming schedule and this should be stuck to all year round. If anything your dog may be better off going a little shorter in the winter. Let me explain…
These coat types are like sponges, they soak up moisture. Everytime your dog gets wet their coat is absorbing moisture and this will take a long time to fully dry out, probably just in time for their next walk! Unless they are dried thoroughly and brushed very regularly they will become tangly very quickly 😬
Having a damp coat is not only smelly and uncomfortable, it can lead to all sorts of skin issues as well as fungal and bacterial problems 🦠
If your dog is arthritic it can exacerbate their symptoms causing more pain and discomfort 😩
It’s especially important to keep puppy’s and senior dogs dry so as not to risk more serious problems such as pneumonia 😞
Any extra length means you’re more at risk of the coat becoming matted, as well as being extremely uncomfortable it also means it takes even longer than usual to dry 😞
A matted coat also means they WILL need to be shaved very short at their next grooming appointment! ‼️
Keeping your dog’s coat at a manageable length means they will dry faster 👍
You can always pop a jacket or jumper on during their walks or anytime they may need some extra warmth 🐶
