The higher the number on the far right, the higher the cholesterol level. Miniature Schnauzers have a naturally high cholesterol level and need a low-fat diet throughout their adult life or they will develop diabetes or pancreatitis in their later years. A good fat content for adult schnauzers is 8-10%, which is hard to find. Most dog foods have an 18% fat content. If you notice, they always put the Minimum Fat content on the side of the bag, which means the fat content can be 2% higher. As you can see, from this chart, Miniature Schnauzers are second only to the Golden Retriever. The problem with all kibble; it's at least 48% carbs, which turns to sugar. So it's not JUST the fat content you need to worry about, it's also the carbs. This is why miniature schnauzers have such a problem with diabetes and pancreatitis in their later years. Over time on a kibble diet, their pancreas begins to wear out.
