It is estimated that one in ten dogs has an allergy. Allergies usually do not go away, but with expert care and long-term effort, they can often be managed so that the dog remains symptom-free. In Finland, atopic dermatitis is the most common form of allergy in dogs.

Finland's first officially certified veterinary dermatologist, Kirsti Schildt, explains that allergen immunotherapy is the only treatment that directly targets atopic disease. Fatty acids that help restore the skin barrier are recommended as supportive care for atopic dermatitis.

"The most important thing is the core treatment: relieving itching and inflammation with medication so that the animal feels well. In addition, various supportive treatments can be used, such as shampoo, conditioner, fatty acids administered orally or applied to the skin."
