🌞 Transforming Irrigation with Solar Energy in Sheger City
At Gelan Arabssa, Koye Feche Subcity, Solar Village Ethiopia is driving a practical shift toward sustainable agriculture through the implementation of a solar-powered water pump integrated with drip irrigation.
The project supports Alemi, Gulemi, and Friends Irrigation & Vegetable Association, a horticulture-focused group managing 2 hectares of farmland since 2021 GC.
🚜 The Challenge
The association previously relied on a 4 kW diesel pump, with irrigation costs reaching approximately 9,000 ETB per day (every 3–4 days). Over time, five diesel pumps were purchased—all now non-functional—highlighting the financial and operational burden of conventional systems.
☀️ The Solution
2.2 kW solar water pump
1,000-liter water storage tank
500 m² drip irrigation system (demonstration phase)
This transition eliminates fuel dependency, reduces maintenance costs, and improves efficiency.
🤝 Collaborative Effort
Sinqee Bank – Financing support
One Million Birtu (አንድ ሚሊዮን ብርቱ) – Operational support
Solar Village Ethiopia – System implementation and delivery
🌱 The drip irrigation system is currently being piloted, with plans to scale based on performance. The initiative is also expected to inspire adoption among nearby farmers.
🌍 This is more than a project—it is a replicable model for climate-smart agriculture in Ethiopia.
