🌞 Transforming Irrigation with Solar Energy in Sheger City

At Gelan Arabssa, Koye Feche Subcity, Solar Village Ethiopia is driving a practical shift toward sustainable agriculture through the implementation of a solar-powered water pump integrated with drip irrigation.

The project supports Alemi, Gulemi, and Friends Irrigation & Vegetable Association, a horticulture-focused group managing 2 hectares of farmland since 2021 GC.

🚜 The Challenge
The association previously relied on a 4 kW diesel pump, with irrigation costs reaching approximately 9,000 ETB per day (every 3–4 days). Over time, five diesel pumps were purchased—all now non-functional—highlighting the financial and operational burden of conventional systems.

☀️ The Solution

2.2 kW solar water pump
1,000-liter water storage tank
500 m² drip irrigation system (demonstration phase)

This transition eliminates fuel dependency, reduces maintenance costs, and improves efficiency.

🤝 Collaborative Effort

Sinqee Bank – Financing support
One Million Birtu (አንድ ሚሊዮን ብርቱ) – Operational support
Solar Village Ethiopia – System implementation and delivery

🌱 The drip irrigation system is currently being piloted, with plans to scale based on performance. The initiative is also expected to inspire adoption among nearby farmers.

🌍 This is more than a project—it is a replicable model for climate-smart agriculture in Ethiopia.

☀️ Powering 50 Hectares with the Sun | Halaba Solar Irrigation Launch
Official handover ceremony of a major solar-powered irrigation project in Wera Dijo Woreda, Halaba Zone.
We are proud to share that Solar Village Ethiopia participated in the official handover ceremony of a major solar-powered irrigation project in Wera Dijo Woreda, Halaba Zone.
On February 11, 2018 E.C., a 60 million birr solar irrigation plant in Bendo Choloksa Kebele was officially handed over, marking a significant step toward climate-resilient agriculture in the region.
Project Highlights

Development of 50 hectares of irrigated farmland
Powered by five deep water wells with solar pumping systems
Direct beneficiaries: 300 farmers
Construction timeline: 9 months
10% of the total cost contributed by the local community
The project aims to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen climate resilience, and reduce poverty by enabling sustainable irrigation practices. In the coming years, the broader program is expected to benefit up to 10,000 farmers across the zone, including women, youth, and people with disabilities.
During the ceremony, district and zonal leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration between the regional government, stakeholders, contractors, and the community. They reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring logistical support and timely completion of the project.
Our Managing Director, Mr. Lebeza Alemu, expressed his pride in contributing to this transformative initiative. He reaffirmed Solar Village Ethiopia’s commitment to delivering high-quality construction and ensuring that each solar pump supports up to 10 hectares of productive farmland—creating measurable improvements in farmers’ livelihoods.
We are honored to stand alongside government partners and local communities in delivering clean energy solutions that drive agricultural transformation.

Project Update | Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Water Solutions 💧☀️

From February 9–14, Solar Village Ethiopia successfully conducted hands-on training and solar water pump installations across the Oromia Region – Gimbichu, Adea, and Lomi.

This achievement was made possible by our committed staff, who worked tirelessly on the ground — ensuring quality installation, practical knowledge transfer, and strong community engagement throughout the entire process.

The week was more than just installation — it was about capacity building and empowerment. Farmers and local stakeholders actively participated in the training sessions, gaining the skills needed to confidently operate and maintain their systems.

The result?
Clean, reliable water powered by renewable energy — reducing dependency on diesel, lowering operational costs, and boosting agricultural productivity.

When water flows, opportunity flows with it.

At Solar Village Ethiopia, we remain dedicated to delivering sustainable, climate-smart solutions that strengthen rural livelihoods.
