Rescuing the five dogs from the Torrox-Competa campo.
Two weeks ago, I became aware of some dogs that had turned up in the campo - from the photos it was clear they were in poor condition...and one was critically ill.
Bringing five feral/semi-feral dogs to safety is not a simple task.
Thankfully the people living closeby were deeply concerned for the dogs, followed all advice given and were deciated to a daily feeding routine.
Victoria was first able to help the sick male dog, as you can see by the photos he wouldn´t have survived much longer. He has active leishmania, he has already started extensive treatment. but has a long road to recover. As his organs are not badly damaged, he has a good chance.
Some days later the other 4 dogs were also trapped, 2 by 2. They were taken straight to the vet for bloodtests. It is not easy to take blood from scared, wild dogs that will bite from fear but we managed. That´s the hardest part done - so they can now begin to settle and relax.
Their results came back today and sadly all four are also positive for leish and rickettsia (a tick borne disease) with treatment they should recover well.
None of the dogs were microchipped, 3 are young females who would have produced litter after litter in the campo if they were not rescued.

Rescate de los cinco perros del campo de Torrox-Competa.
Hace dos semanas, me enteré de que habían aparecido unos perros en el campo. Por las fotos, era evidente que estaban en mal estado... y uno de ellos estaba gravemente enfermo.
Poner a salvo a cinco perros salvajes o semisalvajes no es tarea fácil.
Afortunadamente, los vecinos estaban muy preocupados por los perros, siguieron todos los consejos y se comprometieron a alimentarlos a diario.
Victoria fue la primera en poder ayudar al perro macho enfermo; como se puede ver, pero por las fotos, no habría sobrevivido mucho más tiempo. Tiene leishmaniasis activa y ya ha comenzado un tratamiento intensivo, pero le espera una larga recuperación. Como sus órganos no están muy dañados, tiene buenas posibilidades.
Unos días después, los otros cuatro perros también fueron rescatados, de dos en dos. Los llevamos directamente al veterinario para hacerles análisis de sangre. No es fácil sacar sangre de perros salvajes asustados que muerden por el miedo, pero lo conseguimos. Ya pasó lo más difícil, así que ahora pueden empezar a relajarse.
Hoy llegaron los resultados y, lamentablemente, los cuatro dieron positivo a leishmaniasis y rickettsiosis (una enfermedad transmitida por garrapatas). Con tratamiento, deberían recuperarse bien.
Ninguno de los perros tenía microchip. Tres son hembras jóvenes que habrían tenido camada tras camada en el campo si no las hubieran rescatado.
